When carrying a sector 2 entry (parallel), are you required to intercept the inbound or is it acceptable to not and then carry out what is effectively a direct entry?

Thanks

Just let the Airbus NAV or Boeing LNAV do it for you. Works for me!!

Seriously though, I don't think there is any requirement to be on the inbound track during the completion of the sector 1 entry phase, certainly you should fly over the fix then establish in the hold at the end of the entry phase.

Sector 1 Entry Procedure (Parallel Entry)
3.4.2 Entry into a holding pattern from Sector 1 is as follows:
(a) on reaching the holding fix, the aircraft is turned to the reciprocal of
the holding pattern inbound track for the appropriate period of time
or until reaching the limiting outbound distance, if published; then
(b) the aircraft is turned onto the holding side to intercept the inbound
track until reaching the fix; and then
(c) the aircraft is turned to follow the holding pattern.

When carrying a sector 2 entry (parallel),

Are you talking sector 2 (teardrop) or sector 1 (parallel)?

A sector 2 is the easiest one to do, because being 30 degrees off the inbound for 1 minute puts you on the inbound after the turn, assuming you allow for the drift.

Sector 1 is expected to overshoot the inbound leg (they even show it on the diagram) but they expect you to make an effort to regain the track. If you can't do that, home to the aid anyway. Then you are within 30 degrees to go straight outbound, or you can then join the hold if needed.
