Great example on how useless mayday calls can be. I would have probably not even bothered making one (until after landing, with a cell phone).

No fire extinguisher on board?

Would you have used it in flight ? Not sure about this, but I'd tend to landing first and then figuring it out. Also, if something is burning behind the panel, the extinguisher may not reach the source.

Not in flight, but as soon as the aircraft is on the ground.

It seems he didn't make any attempt to extinguish the fire which led to a total loss.
