Relocating to Qatar

I'm moving from Bahrain to Qatar and thought of driving my car there. Anybody know what the process would be?

Get someone to ship it on a flatbed or drive it for you...nothing to see on the highway...insane drivers..and border headaches...

Make sure you get the export licenses from Bahrain first, otherwise you'll have to drive/ship the car back to Bahrain to get them before you can register your car in Qatar. And make sure the car can and will be registered in Qatar, I.e. There might be some laws regarding how old the car can be, I think 5 years max. You have to check that.

I agree with Iron, pay 200BD and let a company take it for you. Some of them will do all the paper work for you, and have it delivered at your door in Qatar. With all the beaurocracy involved I would think that this is a much better deal, since they are fully aware of the processes involved.

+1 for eMovers - I used them for a car + furnishings from UAE to Qatar. At tht time they were not established in Qatar so they sub-contracted the port clearance etc but it still worked out well. Shipped in a container.

The flat-bed suggestion is probably the most practical for a car only. Let someone else take all the pain of paperwork, queues, hassles etc. Just throw money at the problem.

The problem with driving from BAH is that there's a bit of Saudi in the way. It can be done but the paperwork is pretty horrible and there are other strange rules. For example, I believe bi-zenon headlamps are illegal in KSA and if Customs find them, they smash them - with a hammer.... might not be true, but could be. :rolleyes:

There are reportedly age restrictions on vehicles being imported into Qatar...check this before you ship

Would it not be easier just to sell your car in Bah and get another new one here? Unless it is a classic or you very emotionally attached to it?

both my cars are around 2 years old and with very low mileage since we don't have great distances to drive in Bahrain, so the issue is more a matter of value. I doubt I would get what they are worth if I sell them so I just have to measure with which option I will lose the least.

yup Iron - quite agree - novelty soon wears off to - just another ILS - or now RNAV - land park, trudge thru customs to another airport hotel - layover and start the process in reverse.
