Sopwith Triplane replica

Hi Forumites.
Back in the early 1970's, I was involved in the building of a Triplane replica at 261 (Guildford) Sqn, ATC. It was being built under the auspices of the PFA, with the project number 1539. Does anybody know if the aircraft was completed and, if so, what became of it?

I have just lifted my copy of PFA Popular Flying Vol 18 No 2 Mar-Apr 1972 off the shelf.

Project No. 1569 was indeed a Triplane replica, but it was an Avro Triplane (probably more correctly a Roe Triplane). It was registered to an M Alliott of Camberley Surrey.

I have no recollection of the aircraft having been registered or completed.

I think you must have a rogue copy of the March/April edition of the PFA magazine. The copy we have at Brooklands clearly states, in line four, para three on page two it was a Sopwith Triplane. Also, I was there during the early stages of its construction and remember it was thus...

I'm pretty sure this Sopwith Triplane project was purchased by Philip Mann and was completed at Booker by PPS for Patrick Lindsay as G-BHEW.

It went to the USA and was badly damaged in Hurricane Andrew when with Kermit Weeks. I believe that it is now repaired and flying in California with a rotary engine.

This depends on whether the PPS project was started by M Alliott, which was certainly the supposition at the time.

I refer to planemike's post, in which he refers to the triplane being a Roe triplane and being made for a Mr. M Alliott.

The full name of A. V. Roe, founder of the Avro company was Alliott Verdon Roe.

Alliott is not the most common of names by a very long chalk.

If this was a Roe triplane, I wonder if there could be some family connection?

Thanks for your reply, looks as though we may both a have a rogue copy of PF from April/March 72!!! Had not seen the article on Project 1539 on pages 2/3. The info I quoted is on page 14 entitled PROJECTS, see the first one.....

Both right.........!!! Having read the article, my money is on Sopwith.
