I've just heard sadly of the passing of Ronny Hare, former Secretary of the Flight Engineers Association. I didn't know Ron when he was flying but enjoyed spending time with him in his final few years at the Essendon Bowling Club where he was recently Club president.

Maybe some of my Pilot friends can share more stories. Condolences to his family including Son Matty who is a LAME at Virgin.

Flew with Ron many times and have fond memories of Darwin overnights on the 727. A great Flight Engineer and a great character. Who could forget the baseball hat with the artificial pony tail. Another larger than life crew member from the era when flying was fun. " I go nowhere with less than 21,000lbs of fuel Captain".
Rest in Peace Ron.

I seem to remember an article in I think, the Bulletin, which canvassed crews favourite eating places. There were a lot of pilots who suggested some very exotic fare and Ron's outstanding one, a pie shop in Perth.

Was a youngster on Ron's last flight......A flight from Mel to Cooly and back. Sat in the jumpseat and prior to push back, asked me to find page so an so from the QRH or something similar.....I opened to the said page and copped an eyeful. HAHA
knew Ron from an early age and he was colleagues with my old man for many many years.
Great bloke and top character. Real shame the old guard are getting on and disappearing. Different world now, flying not like it used to be with blokes like this.
RIP

Had the Pleasure of being trained by Ron on the 727!

Running around the panel on day one went something like this --

Ron - what are those things there on the panel?

Sos- What things?

Ron - all those Gauges there - ( pointing with the newspaper - Company issue)

Sos- what the fuel gauges

Ron - yes very good , now what are they for ?

Sos- (very puzzled now ) reading the quantity of fuel in each tank.

Ron- CORRECT ! - they are fuel tanks NOT air tanks and don't let the 2 monkeys
Sitting in front of you tell you any different!!

Now I am one of those monkeys in the front but the many words of wisdom from Ron still come back to me.

Fond memories
Rip Ron

"Three sevens are 18000 lbs-checked"

Heard that observation more than once on the three-holer.

Sad to keep being reminded that we are all getting closer to facing the grim reaper.

Many fond memories of the good lad ....
