Is Cockpit Weather for Light aircraft available in OZ ?

Hi guys , does anyone know of any portable GPS /XM type unit that allows weather information to be displayed in the flight deck for Australia. Something like the Garmin units they have for in USA that are using XM weather /NEXRAD Aviation | XM WX Satellite Weather | SiriusXM (http://www.xmwxweather.com/aviation/) but for Oz ?

Nor is it likely to ever be, airlines have no interest, therefor the bureaucracy has no interest, and the likelihood of a commercial service provider is zilch.

Oz Runways is trying as best they can and you can BOM radar but that's about
it

Weather to Fly

You have always been able to get area and location weather briefing in OzRunways as well as quickly pull up the BOM rain radar. In 3.0 we introduce SIGMETs displayed on top of the PCA. Just turn on this feature and select the PCA to see where significant weather events are occurring.

The last time I looked at this there was a solution.

Using an Avidyne MLX770 Avidyne MLX770 Two-Way Datalink Receiver (http://www.avidyne.com/products/mlx770/index.asp)

and a subscription from WSI then satellite weather was essentially available in Australia.

However, I can no longer find any reference on the WSI website to providing the data over satelite so it may no longer be available.

I just hate to burst your bubble but inflight weather is available to the select few sensible enough to fly Vintage Austers.

what you do is slide the side window back and crack on some slip.
you get lots of it, accurately and in real time.

...AND no batteries needed. :ok::ok::ok:

Have a look at fore flight I used it on the us and makes oz runways look cheap

Not "portable", but I read there is a Garmin weather subscription available for those lucky enough to have G500/600 with the satellite receiver.. https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/gfds-weather/

Not sure how much it costs.. probably $$$
Edit: If i'd bothered to read the page, it has the subscription costs towards the bottom at the side.


I use an app called "Rain?" on my iPad to get the BOM weather radars.

Thanks guys , up to what kid of altitudes are you guys getting reliable 3G or EDGE data connection on your IPADS to allow weather APPS or OZ runways to work and display weather data?

Testra have the best mobile coverage for GA in Australia.

Recently flew YMMB to Bankstown and had 3g/4g coverage all the way. Meant you could get weather from NAIPS and radar images from 128 km Melbourne Radar Loop (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR023.loop.shtml#skip) all the way.

Cheap and cheerful and works pretty well.

I use an iPhone 5 with Ozrunways and find it's great.

VFR flight between 4-9 thousand feet.

Handy being able to get TAFs etc from Airservices in the air, look at radar images and update flight plans.

There are several great iPhone apps for aviation, the tough part is deciding what to get. OzRunways, Avplan and Airnav Pro are all good choices.

I've had it working at 20,000 ft. Telstra 3G/4G. Don't cheap out with Optus/Voda. This is one thing worth spending the money on.
