The USMC is being downsized to about 170,000 Troops due to budget cuts.

The US Army is also downsizing due to the same budget pressures.

Is there a new need for the US Army to conduct Operations with the US Navy?

Should the USMC be concerned about the Army getting its nose under their Tent?

Could the Marines actually find some benefit to the Army taking over some of the traditional Marine Missions that require large numbers of Troops, Armored Vehicles and the like....leaving the Marines to do the Quick Reaction Missions they excel in performing?

I am sure there are Army Generals that would like to see the end of the US Marines.....as there have been many in the past who both advocated just that and went to some lengths to convince Congress to do just that.

In the new battle plans the Army will need Ospreys to stay anything above the junior varsity. High speed and long range will rule the pacific.

Sultan,
It will need a LOT of V22s to fulfill this mission. There are probably some elements within the US Navy that would like to see a smaller USMC - particularly if they could 'kill off' programmes like F35B and reinvest in conventional CV based platforms.

Didn't think it was new as aviation elements of the 10th Mountain Infantry Division embarked and launched air assault from Ike, during Op Uphold Democracy in 94.

The Newsweek magazine article on that op, had some interesting photos of the carrier when it sailed...especially on deck..........there were some Nightstalker MH60L parked amongst the regular UH-60L

Also there were the J-SWORD trials of the AH-64A operating off a carrier over a decade ago....

And theres plenty of pics of regular CH-47D and Nightstalker MH-47E operating off the deck, cross deck landings on the US Navy website from the last 10 years or so...especially in the Med and off the Sea of Japan

Cheers

The future of the Marines is solid. Chatter amongst provincial Generals doesn't matter. The Marine Corps has an incredible lobby in DC, and are quite adept at politics themselves and that's what counts.

The USMC is being downsized to about 170,000 Troops due to budget cuts.

They need to be careful.

Any more cuts and the USMC will be smaller than the UK's combined armed forces.
