When half-watching TV recently I think I heard a service wife complaining that her husband, who was currently serving in HM Forces, had not received sufficient maternity leave.
Is it true? Are male serving personnel granted such leave and for how long?

True as far as I'm aware, she is however most likely talking about Paternity Leave which is two weeks paid leave.

It will soon be law that parents will be able to share the leave equally. That could mean the father taking 6 months off whilst the mother goes out to work (after the mandatory 2 weeks). If the mother isn't working, the father could still have that leave.

Yes, those are the current rules, but fathers will soon (not sure how soon) be allowed the same benefits as serving mothers currently get. That will mean 6 months on full pay.

It will be 6 months full pay paternity leave BUT only if the mother returns to full time work. It will never be 6 months paid leave for both parents.

But what if the mother is not in employment?

ColinB... Prince William Gets Two Weeks Of Paternity Leave To Take Care Of Royal Baby (http://www.ibtimes.com/prince-william-gets-two-weeks-paternity-leave-take-care-royal-baby-1353539)

The Associated Press (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-207_162-57594532/prince-william-to-get-2-week-paternity-leave/) reports Prince William has been granted a two week leave from the Royal Air Force in order to be with his son.

Paternity leave was approved as British law in 2003, and William will be paid his full military salary during his leave.

Men are allowed paternity leave for two weeks with a flat weekly salary of 137 pounds, $206, AP notes, but the weekly rate could be higher depending on the employer.

In Canada, fathers are entitled to take up to 9 months of paternity leave. Mothers can take up to a year. However, only one parent can take the leave not both.
