Air Commodore Arthur Strudwick, who has died aged 92, spent much of his RAF service as a fighter pilot, initially flying Spitfires in north-west Europe and later piloting the supersonic Lightning as commander of one of the RAF’s main fighter bases.

When I was young, at an early stage I knew I wanted to fly, and I knew I wanted to be a fighter pilot. I knew I did because I lived and breathed the challenge of man and machine in the air as part of a bigger team. I soaked up all the stories and information about my fighter pilot grandfather and learn't about the the legends that he had had as he would say, 'the good fortune to have been in the company of'. Among people like Finucane, Corner, Nowell and many other lesser known heroes, was a chap called Strudwick. Along with the others he will always be a legend to me because I have an understanding of the things they went through and the great things they achieved despite this. So when I am eighty and my grandchildren ask if I knew anyone who had been in the war, I shall tell them about my grandfather and a man called Arthur Strudwick and his friends. Rest in peace sir and rest well now.
