The Times (behind pay wall): Egypt’s army give Morsi 48 hours to resolve crisis (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/world/middleeast/article3804755.ece)

The head of the Egyptian army has given President Morsi 48 hours to resolve the political unrest that has sent millions of protesters onto the streets, or face military intervention. In a statement read live on television, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued what he described as a final ultimatum to politicians that yesterday’s “glorious” demonstrations, which took place exactly a year after Mr Morsi was inaugurated as president, could not go answered.

“If the demands of the people are not ensured, based on its patriotic and historic responsibilities, and out of respect for the demands of the people, [the army] will declare a roadmap plan for the future,” warned General Sisi. “Certain measures will be exacted by the participation of all the patriotic forces, including the youth, who were and are defending their own revolution, without sidelining or marginalising any party.”

President Obama immediately voiced concern at developments in Cairo, saying that democracy was not just about elections and urging Mr Morsi to do more to co-operate with opposition parties. “Everyone must show restraint,” said Mr Obama, speaking in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the final leg of his tour of Africa.

General Sisi said that the millions of protesters who flooded the streets of Egypt’s towns and cities yesterday had expressed their will in an “unprecedented” fashion, and that the army was now prepared to step in to enforce an “inclusive” solution. Wasting any more time would lead to deeper political divisions, said General Sisi. He promised that the army will “not be a party in politics or rule”, but claimed that it had a responsibility to act because Egypt’s national security was facing a “grave danger”............

Egypt in turmoil as defiant Morsi stands firm over 'coup' threat (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/01/egypt-army-mohamed-morsi-coup)

President retains US backing and refuses to bow down to two-day ultimatum from the head of the nation's armed forces

Egypt was thrown into fresh turmoil on Monday when President Mohamed Morsi's aides indicated he would not give in to the threat of a military coup just hours after the army gave him two days to placate the millions who have taken to the streets calling for his departure.

The head of Egypt's armed forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, threatened direct military involvement in the political process "if the demands of the people are not met", in a statement implying that Morsi should either step down or at least call early elections.

The presidency indicated that it viewed the statement as a coup d'etat. "Obviously we feel this is a military coup," a presidential aide said. "But the conviction within the presidency is that [the coup] won't be able to move forward without American approval."

"But the conviction within the presidency is that [the coup] won't be able to move forward without American approval."

Which I doubt they will receive, as that would an admission of a major failure of Obama's foregin policies. Obama just sent Morsi F-16 fighters and a ton of money.

But then again, that military aid and funds did go to the Egyptian Military. So it is possible, but I would be very suprised if Obama gave the green light to the Egyptian Military to remove Morsi from office.

Coup ?

The wording I read was that they (the military) specifically said
they don't want to take power, just facilitate an
inclusive and functioning Gov't.

The continued instability of the Middle East never ceases to amaze us.

Nobody listens to Obama anymore. The military have already removed Morsi.

Huge slap in Obama's face!

The Islamist (Odumbo) just got told where the Cow ate the Cabbage.....and Americans should be paying attention to the events in Egypt and take some notes.

I see this a huge step towards individual freedom for the Egyptians.

I can envisage Egypt and perhaps the whole Arab Spring States lurching from coup to coup eventually leading to a civil war, possibly divided along sectarian divides, it could rage for centuries. :ugh:
