If they re up for another nine years.

I suspect that may be as a result of the introduction of the so called "1500 hour rule" in the USA.

From August, both pilots flying US airliners must have the US ATPL equivalent, not just the captain. To upgrade to the ATPL, civilian trained pilots must have 1500 hours whereas ex-military pilots require only 750 hours.

New Qualification Requirements for U.S. Pilots - (http://www.alpa.org/portals/alpa/fastread/2013/FastReadNewsflash_20130318.htm)March 18, 2013 (http://www.alpa.org/portals/alpa/fastread/2013/FastReadNewsflash_20130318.htm)

So I guess the USAF may be expecting a slight retention problem.

:hmm:

What's this I hear? A country that gives it's military pilots credit for their experience. Heresy I tell you. It'll never catch on.
I wake up every day and thank god that all my hours of military flying count for nothing.
Who's laughing now spams? Huh.

This additional bonus is just for fighter pilots, not all USAF pilots.

It might just have something to do with the recent (within the past 2-3 years) voluntary separation program where USAF paid folks, including pilots, to leave.

Along with drastically curtailing the numbers of pilots finishing training who went to fighters since the demand was for UAV/RPA drivers as well as the drawdown in numbers of fast jets as well.

Combined with endless rotations to sandy places while the age 65 clock for the airlines counts down.

What could possibly go wrong with voluntarily thinning the herd while not raising replacements?

Jeezuz...

BH,

if one has flown one of these machines one would know that you shouldn't have to pay premiums to someone to stay in fighters....if you have to, you've got bigger problems....

if the only reason they can be enticed to stay with the regulars is for that relatively paltry sum, they're not the ones you want in the fighters anyway.

(when I used up my Guard flying pay days in fighters for the month, I would sit on the ops counter every morning waiting/hoping that some part-timer would not show up that day and then I would fill in the 4-ship....for free)

....actually one would think the larger bonus would be more appropriate for those guys that have to suffer the heavies.
