Has anyone any idea what/who/where/why? a Partenavia P.68 has been flying a reciprocal slightly northeast/southwest pattern over Sheffield, appearing and disappearing about every 5 minutes, so not a very large distance.
It has been flying it for the last 90 minutes or so, and it was also doing it through the Bank holday last weekend.
No probs with it, I'm an enthusiast, I just wanted to know.
Thanks in advance.

Had one doing that a couple of weeks ago near Reading Berkshire. I believe it was owned by a survey company.

Sounds like a LIDAR survey. The aircraft is fitted with a scanning laser which looks below and out to the side of the aircraft. The line spacing is determined partly by the altitude and partly by the larer scan angle selected.

Wiki has some good info
