I'm putting a bit of effort into the forum tonight guys. I have a few more asks, although i will make this one the last of the night, and i'll save a few more for another time, anyhow here goes...I have a good friend who was a Nav on Tornado's and he told me a legendary tale of a Tornado crew flying across a Loch some where north of the border, when a bird of prey was helping himself to a nice salmon, when the bird was rudely interupted by a Tornado and so the bird of prey dropped the fish and a million in one thing happend? the fish struck the canopy, and the board of enquiry was set up. It was concluded as a fish strike as any one heard of this tale.

Plausable. I have just missed a Golden Eagle in the glens, though it wasn't 'carrying'. The bird would presumably have been an osprey - seen them too.

Partially true, it was in fact a Hare and was a multiple strike, the other being the Tortoise. :ok:

Well a Jag WAS hit by a snake.

A sidewinder's a kind of snake, right?

I heard tales of a flying fish strike on a low flying Sea Harrier, but it didn't happen while I worked on them. Never let the truth stand in the way of a good dit!:)

OK so does that make it a Kipper 3 call ?

I believe our Courtney had a hand (chinagraph) in this little "development" :D

Best ...

Coff.

Hope you don't mind Pontifex ... but the opportunity to use your photo was too great to miss :ok:

Our good friend Pontifex was in the Nimrod LH seat ...

Indeed, yes, Coff. Making the mighty hunter into a true multi-role platform! The only role that didn't work out for her was AEW, but that was no reason to cut her off in her prime.

Probably Kipper 2, though. :ok:

Lack of assistance from hare traffic control?

Have heard tales of Buccaneers flying out of either Gib or Akrotiri encountering fish strikes while bouncing along over the Med.

Apocryphal?

Wensleydale ... You're on fire tonight ... what are you drinking ... I'll have a pint :ok:

Whilst sailing, I have seen a flying fish at least 10 foot up, and whilst flying out of Gib I have seen a Bucc lower, so that's possible.

Surely only at hareports.

A Harrier pilot put in an incident report in Belize when he ran over a land crab and the broken shell burst one of the tyres.

...as in the mid 1920s when the pith helmet was standard issue flying kit. Evidence provided by this example from 8 Squadron's photo archive.

From memory, the DH9As were pictured at a remote landing ground on Perim Island in 1928(ish). Perim stands in the Red Sea near Aden. 8 Sqn spent from 1921 to1971 in the Middle East (with the exception of a few months flying Liberators from Ceylon at the end of WW2). The Shacks came on the return to the UK at Kinloss in '71. Therefore there are lots of pictures between DH9A and Shackleton.

For more good pictures etc, visit the 8 Sqn website and click onto the history button. You will find out why the Sqn has an arab dagger on its badge and why it is known as "Aden's Own".

8 Squadron Home Page (http://www.8squadron.co.uk/)

Perhaps it is getting time for the "are there any good Squadron Websites out there" thread to be opened.
