All roads double parked for a 5 mile radius, hundreds of people on roads, footpaths and the pub car park, and traffic in the village at a total standstill. Why ? All to watch a 70 plus year old aeroplane do a display in commemoration of something that happened 70 years ago tonight. Having served on 617 I had almost taken the dams raid for granted but having seen the turnout tonight has brought home how much it meant, and still means to a large number of people.

The Lancaster kicked up an awful lot of dust in my garden this evening.

At least some people can remember! We return to our Derbyshire roots from Cambridgeshire et al in a few weeks time, having left in 1983 and then spent 30 years with the Royal Air Force. Can't wait.

The broadcast on BBC2 tonight stirred my heart, and .....

Funny how those four Merlins kick up dust in my eyes every time I hear them. Perhaps it's because my father-in-law ended the war as a Lancaster pilot on a pathfinder squadron. He's still going at 93 God bless him!

There was a Solo Navex from Cranwell on the JP that went within 20 miles of Ladybower, which every student pilot since 1945 probably concluded was not a coincidence. I'm sure every one of us got 18 miles off track.:ok:

Got lost doing some LL Affil over Germany and ended up right over the Moehne Dam too!

Shockingly bad nav skills; it's a wonder I passed. At least I remembered to do a wing-dip salute each time.

I was there today. I was one of the guilty ones who just abandoned their car on the grass verge. The sight was amazing and even brought a tear to my eye. It amazed me how many people turned out and even at just 23 years old I'm still at awe at the aircraft and the mission they completed.
