Just saw it on an Italian newspaper, thought I'd post it in case someone's interested.

awful google translation, but can still make sense of it:
Google Traduttore (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=it&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=it&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fpalermo.repubblica.it%2Fcronaca%2F2013%2F05%2 F15%2Fnews%2Fsparisce_la_traccia_radar_ricerche_in_mare_di_u n_aereo-58844183%2F%3Fref%3DHRER1-1)

Regards.

Possibly an airliner? I pray that this is not the case...

The article states clearly:
"ma č escluso che si tratti di un aereo di linea"
which should mean that it's not by any means an airliner.
Sky says it's military, Catania's port authority thinks the opposite.

Google translates that as : "but it is possible that it is an airliner" or into Spanish as "Es posible que esto sea un avión comercial"

My limited Italian tells me that it means the opposite, that it is 'excluded' that it is an airliner.

Let's hope it's not an airliner.

your limited Italian is correct ;)

Edit: it looks like the signal was a Cospas-Sarsat one. They are investigating whether it is a false alarm or not.

I can't help thinking that had it been an airliner, there would have been news reports by now. It shouldn't take civil ATC in Europe long to determine that an airliner is missing.

Agree.

Two hours from the first report, there would definitely be something in the public domain by now.

Still nothing...
I only found the article by Repubblica, La Stampa and Corriere della Sera:
Google Traduttore (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=it&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.corriere.it%2Fcronache%2F13_maggio_15%2Fa llarme-aereo-caduto-eolie_e5c8ba00-bd4a-11e2-a017-98f938f31864.shtml)

Nothing from BBC, El Pais and El Mundo.
