Filed a deermiss report back in the eighties at Basel.

I was headsdown in LHS. P2 handling night time take off. Just as I called 'rotate' he called 'Oh S**T!' . Once uneventfully airborne he reported seeing a deer suddenly appear in the lights right on the centreline. This was in a Trident with its offset nosewheel. Whether that accounted for missing the beast - who knows?

SOP for most bush strips in Africa is to buzz the strip to scare the wildlife but the perishers sometimes come back to dash across the field by the time you have gone around.

It was camels and donkeys on runways when I was based in the Middle East some 45 years ago.

Had to laugh at the passenger comment about not being told why the go around took place "Only when they came around to land again that the passengers were informed of what had happened" and that "It was quite shocking".

Numb nut. Wonder if she thought she should have been told before the go around was commanded?

RTO succesful, return to stand. Passengers not allowed off. Forward pax door opened. Different sort of smell in the air. FO sent to inspect undercarriage, engine intakes.

Fire engine appears, directs hose at nose undercarriage, then nose, then (after closing port pax door) foward fuselage, both sides, inner halves of wings, main U/C. Pig guts slide down hull past forward windows as the fire engine hose works its way over the fuselage.

FO returns, a shade or two paler and after a detour to the tower toilet. Fire up again (WhooshWhump, whooshWhump, it's a 1-11).

"Ladies and gentlemen, we do offer our apologies for the delay. We are now departing the stand and expect to be en route to xxxxx within six minutes. On behalf of YYYY airlines I hope you have enjoyed your stay in this exotic corner of our country and we hope that you will come again".

No, of course the dialogue didn't happen. The event did, though, and it was a minor one amongst many at a fairly remote outpost; I just happened to be the airline's agent and on board at the time.

Seem to remeber a Jet Provost hitting a deer on the runway at Linton on Ouse in the 80's. Venison on the menu in the Officer's mess the next evening!

In the 70's hit a deer in the flare at newcastle with a Viscount. By the time the pax had disembarked it was already hanging in the Fire station:ok:

remember taking off from White Waltham a few years ago and a deer wandered onto the numbers as we departed, called ATC to let them know as would be a nasty surprise for anyone landing. For the next 10 mins everyone in the circuit was asking were the deer was now, finally the fire service chased it off.

Something like 30 years ago I had a cockpit ride on a BA747 departing Singapore. After we'd taken off the Captain asked if I'd seen it. The answer was no and, to this day, I can't remember what animal had wandered into view. However, he then went on to tell me that not that long ago he had hit a Hyena on departure from Nairobi except he didn't see it and all he had felt was a slight vibration that he ignored until he arrived in London and was asked to inspect the undercarriage where the remains were still visible!

Deer are becoming a big problem in the UK and culls have been proposed by the govenment, I know of at least two farm strips that have reported near misses between deer and aircraft.

There are roads in Buckinghamshire that I will not drive a motorcycle along during dawn and dusk because the risk of a deer strike is so high.
