This year Oshkosh runs 29 July - 4 August. In Topeka, Kansas the Gathering of Warbirds and Legends runs 1-4 August. I've been to Oshkosh and I went to the Gathering in Columbus Ohio about 6 years ago so I know what each show provides.
Given the timing I reckon the way to see both would be Oshkosh first for a few days then a 2 day drive down to Topeka for the weekend display. I suppose I could fly from Chicago to Kansas City and save a day but there's a railway in Mason City Iowa I would like to investigate and it's not too far off the direct driving route.
That's all assuming I do it on my own, which I'm quite happy to do. I've tried to find a tour that takes in both and I can't even find one that includes the Gathering, everyone (understanably) heads for Oshkosh.
