Hello everyone,

Just wondering why the O-470 has a cool loping sound? Do any other engines such as the IO-550 have the same trait?

Thanks

The 0-470 has lots of 'chug per jug' and swings a big prop at low revs.
The exhaust system is very basic and gives a pleasant 'growl'.
In a machine like a C182 the aircraft moves at a good speed in a fairly course pitch (low revs) hence it 'lopes'.
Good engine in a great aircraft = a fine well balanced performer.

It is a nice engine, but do you know what exactly gives it the Harley like sound? Are the firing intervals even or is it a function of the exhaust pipes?

Big pots low revs;and in my experience with the exhaust systems the 'can' has a 'diffuser'(perforated cone) inside at both ends where the branch comes in. These do fragment inside even when the can itself is sound.
No doubt this will increase the 'Boom'
Cessna 180 and an 0 470 = aviation heaven (especially with the larger wheels)

The 0-470 in my Cessna180 does indeed sound great.
The sound of £ notes flowing out of my wallet for the fuel not so good!!

AH well cessnapete it is probably better than money in the bank, and what fun.
I had one for years and apart from earning its keep (which it did very well)
it was my preferred mode of transport to go to the other job.
You could load it up with all the kit (and extra fuel) for an 'away tow' plus a ground support person and full tanks.
It would then 'laugh' at a short strip with obstructions and with its larger wheels 'bound away' into a climbing turn on another op.
A real workhorse and a peach to fly, with the 40 degree hand brake.
