Please excuse my not using Italian, but is there a way to validate my Australian ATPL to allow me to fly an Italian registered aircraft?
Do I need to undertake a full conversion and is there a flight school near Napoli that would be able to assist?
Grazie.

You can validate your ATPL for one year, not renewable.
If You want a full european ATPL you need to pass theoretical exams and skill test. That is the basic rule.
Then, if you have a full ATPL, not a frozen one, you may have a look to JAR FCL 1 1.015 - 1.016 and appendix 1 to JAR 1.015.

Now everything is changing to EASA but the rules are going to be the same.
If you need any help in Italy about foreign license matters, well, welcome to hell.
by the way, if you are in Naples (as I am) you can try to go to ENAC office next to the air terminal.
Cheers.
