A friend is looking to find details of her father's war record in the RAF, where should she start looking?
Thanks

Best start with this page under "Air Personnel" at National Archives, then take it from there. Send me a PM if you want more help.

Is that something the Hendon Museum can help with??

Wilma - in addition to the above, your friend will probably find the MoD publication scheme section useful -

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ministry-of-defence/about/publication-scheme

Work your way through the various permutations for what is sought.

In respect of medals, decorations, citations, squadron histories etc there are several Highly Respected Gentlemen around here who have Considerable Expert Knowledge. (Not me btw.) LFH

If your friend's mother is able to make the application (or at least sign the forms) the £30 fee is waived.

There is apparently a large backlog of requests awaiting processing by the Disclosures team at Cranwell, so it will take many weeks to arrive

When you get the copy of the service record it will contain a lot of abbreviations and jargon - the Museum staff at Hendon ([email protected]) have had a lot of practice in interpreting such records and should be able to help you/your friend understand the hieroglyphics.
