Maybe there are areas (eg. to the north-east) where JORN doesn't reach, or where some greater granularity or detail is required that JORN can't provide beyond "there's a return at xx co-ordinates travelling at 350kts at 125 degrees".

Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_MQ-4C_Triton)is the UAV being considered.
Boeing P-8A Poseidon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_P-8_Poseidon)(based on Boeing 737) is the manned aircraft.
This combination is being introduced by the US Navy.

P8's for war-fighting, UAV's for ISR. The concept is called BAMS. Makes sense that we follow suit as they are both designed to complement each other.

Yes, the BAMS concept and the P8/ Triton mix look to be a Good choice by the DMO/DOD.
it is a damn pity they cannot make good choices more often, this country has lost $ Billions in very poor choices and mismanaged projects over the past several decades. :ugh::{

As it appears the Orions will be replaced, could they:
be fitted for fire bombing?
be relatively cost effective?
be sent offshore in the 'off' season?
What would a fair sale price be per airframe?
Running cost per hour? How could this work?

Null,
the orions have been purchased by FSA for the turbine element of their course.....
--------------
Posiedon's augmented by Tritons. Could be a workable purchase....but hang on, so bearautwit is going to decide that they don't quite suit 'Australian Conditions', have his 6 year old re-write the spec, and the suppliers will get 10 years paid development work at which point the encumbant muppetry will decide they aren't worth the money and scrap the program. :ugh:
