Non compliant PNG airports

Rumour has it that some of the large PNG operators have asked for legal clarification from CASA PNG about continuing operations into the countries part 139 non compliant aerodromes. The issue was recently bought up at an industry stakeholders meeting in Port Moresby. The operators are concerned about insurance claims if an accident were to occur whilst operating at one of the effected aerodromes. To my knowledge less than 10 aerodromes in PNG are currently part 139 compliant.

This could could have a very significant negative effect on the aviation sector in PNG if not addressed quickly.

Hmmm, not much interest in this. Smacks of everyone ducking for cover.
Reality is, very few airports in PNG will EVER be up to the standards. Part 139 would appear to be a 'wish list'.

PNG Government could get round this by issuing various exemptions, or publishing some sort of "Developmental Air Service" standard as existed way back in time when DC3s ruled the skies.

Meantime, if there is a biggie, I imagine that the insurers would have grounds to snivel on payments while the lawyers would play the blame game.
ICAO may have idealised airport standards, but PNG is a Sovereign State and is quite free to adopt lesser standards in domestic matters. At least give the operators something to allow them to be legal, which clearly is not currently the situation.

I think they have more pressing issues than if an airstrip meets a standard....

At the airshow yesterday, I heard of a case where one Australian operator declined to operate into a PNG airport due to the risk of FOD only to have another Australian operator go and do the operation and damage their fan blades on the first landing. Evidently they spent some 4 hours blending out the blades!:ugh::ugh:

Gravel rash is as much of a risk at many Oz airstrips. More of a problem in PNG is the risk of clobbering pigs, chooks, dogs and kids, any of which will spoil your day.

Or have some raskol/disaffected tribesman or whatever, take a pot shot at you as you are taking off or landing at some bush strip.:eek:

Happened to me once or twice.

They were rotten shots though; they missed by miles!
