I've had an inquiry from someone trying to locate Pottingfield air base. Does anyone have any information if this was an actual base? Did they mean Pottingham, or other bases?

Thanks

In which country is this alleged air base ?

A World War II bomber base in the UK is all I know ... The pilot's family thought their father had taken off from Pottingfield, but I don't think that is correct. I am pursuing other research, but thought someone here might know the answer off the top of their head.

Thanks

POTP,

With a name like that, it was pretty obvious you meant the UK. ;)

Have a look at these lists:

8th United States Army Air Force - UK airfield listing 1942-45
WW2 UK Airfields of the Eighth USAAF (http://www.controltowers.co.uk/8%20list%201.htm)

United States Air Force in Europe - UK airfield listing 1947 to Present
UK airfields of the USAF (http://www.controltowers.co.uk/USAFlist.htm)

List of former Royal Air Force stations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_Royal_Air_Force_stations)

Good luck with the search.

Probably a family variation of Pocklington or Podington - both WW2 airfields.

Liberators flew from Pocklington - Podington was a USAAF 8th Air Force base B-17's flew

from there

If you try saying "Podington" in a fake/stage amurrican ack sent (recommended in private only to start with) - instead of in posh plummy brit, you might eventually get to where they're coming from. ;) LFH

Thanks to everyone for their assistance. I am now 95% certain that the WWII pilot's family I am working with was referring to "Podington", based on his flight records and other research I have conduced about his unit. They are planning a trip to France and the UK to retrace their father's military stations.

Podington is now a dragstrip known as 'Santa Pod Raceway'. Details should be on google.
