View Full Version : Bit of advice

I wonder if anyone here could point me in the right direction.

I'm trying to find out about my Dad's service record. After serving in the RNVR from 1943 on Minelayers and subsequently Tank Landing Craft he was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland in Intelligence until demobbed at the end of the war.

So far I've not been able to find out anything at the National Archive online, or the RNVR records. Just wondered if someone could advise me on any other avenues I can search? Where would I go for Fleet Air Arm records?

Unfortunately he's not in a condition where he can remember or tell me much about it, and never wanted to talk about it in the past.

Thanks in advance.

The RAF has a Disclosures section at Cranwell which provides such info for ex RAF pers, perhaps the FAA has something similar ?

He said:

Unfortunately we do not hold the records for RNR or WWII.

The records are held at the following:

The National Archives

The National Archives (http://www.pro.gov.uk).

however he had provided records for my wife's grandfather who was in the RNPS so you never know.

Would the Fleet Air Arm Museum be able to help? I'm sure they get enquires and should at least be able to point in the right direction.

I'm in the process of doing the same with my Grandad's Army record.

Was extremely disappointed that the non-refundable £30 cheque wasn't being cashed for weeks & weeks, then a couple of days before Xmas received a letter stating they had a backlog and it would take 9-12 months!!! and offering a refund on a non-refundable charge (Must be the proliferation of ancestry websites and TV programmes) It has since been cashed, so I'm hoping that the process has started.

Also included in the letter was contacts for the other services:

There is a 2 part form available on DII from SPVA.
One part is the request for information on your Dad (Name, DoB*, Service No*, Discharge Date - * At least one or the other to stand any chance of success)
The other part is consent of 1st living NoK.
If applicant is living spouse, then the £30 charge is waivered.
Details are censored/limited/incomplete if death occured within last 25 years to respect the family - A copy of Death Certificate is required. Middlesbrough charged me £10 for this after a web-search gave me his reference number - place & date of death are required to make search easier.
