Oswald soaking closes Kowanyama airstrip - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-01-24/oswald-soaking-closes-kowanyama-airport/4481626?section=qld)

Kowanyama's airport was shut down earlier this week after heavy rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald damaged the runway.
The township is heavily reliant on the airstrip as roads are cut off during the wet season.
Kowanyama Mayor Robert Holness says the council is seeking funding for the repairs and helicopter drops.
"That's going to ... stay closed indefinitely until after the wet season - usually lasts about six months up here until about May, June," he said,
"Right now they're trying to work out how they can get supplies and people in."

One would imagine that 'they' would be thinking more of how to get people OUT..??

Thus negating largely, the need to get a whole lot of 'supplies' IN..??

Cheers :}

I haven't been to Kowanyama for quite a while. Has Crappy finally retired ?? Maybe the runway surface has been missing a bit of preventative maintenance by the look of the damage in the photo.

Just looking on the BOM site it appears Gladstone has had approximately 640mm of rain in the last three days. That is getting a bit wet!!!

YMRB was open the last couple of days but most of the planes kept mis-timing their approaches ;) We had some good periods but it was like the weather knew the schedule and put it on for nearly every arrival!
