Yeah, the lava one whilst looking impressive with the lakes there aren't a lot of explosions, or so i've been lead to believe!!! The other volcano not far away is the more active of the two!!

Plus we keep a good 1000' clearance from the top which is more likely around 2000' from the lava lakes itself!!

That second one reminds me of Ambrym, but not so sure of the first one - thought it might have been Tinakula, but that might be over the border for you and doesn't reach 5,000'. Doesn't look like Lopevi as I remember it..

from another thread..

Sure -in the Tropics you don't get moving frontal systems with their nasties, but you get an east-west ITF or convergence zone where the cyclones form. You don't get fog, or only at the lower ports. You do get big afternoon thunderstorms, but you can dodge them providing they are not sitting on the place you want to land. The heavy rain doesn't last long, but if you have come a long way on a 'Pacific Thin Route', you don't want to muck around because the fuel will be getting down. Bad ones can be at night, when you don't want to go to remote places because of unreliable lighting or navaids anyway.

Three things in nature make me feel small.

Stand on the lip of a volcano, say Tanna in Vanuatu, watch the cinders fly and listen to it rumble and hope that that it is all it is going to do, because there is not a damn thing you can do to stop it.

Be on the ground in an earthquake, (with or without subsequent tsunami), preferably outdoors so thing don't fall on you, and know the same feeling.

Bunker down for a few days while the eye of a cyclone goes slowly past, stripping all the leaves from all the trees, blowing away leaf houses -(and the materials to make new ones )- destroying gardens, torrential rain falling in sheets, wind howling and gusting and swinging. And hope the aircraft tied down on the other side of town has survived, because you know you will be needed for relief clean up work later. And if you are trying to do a service to a port that is coming under the influence of a cyclone, knowing when to call it off as the crosswind on the runway gets too high, and even with the wipers belting, the lead-in lights, or runway lights, are hard to make out.

Sure its easy in the central Pacific, we don't have the snow...

Correct on the first one, it is indeed Ambrym, pretty sure that was Benbow to be precise! And the second one was infact Lopevi, I think I was on my way home from Longana that day, looked good with that tiny bit of cloud just over it!

Haven't seen that quote before, but true so far, i'm still waiting for the wet season to kick in proper, they reckon another few weeks and it'll be in full swing, apparently its been coming a bit later the last few years!

This is the Lopevi that I remember.. - probably because I was usually looking UP at it..

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/volcanos/scan0003.jpg

We had a milk-run in the TwOtter, single pilot, that went Vila-Emae 35 miles, Valesdir 20 miles, Lamen Bay 15 miles, Paama 9 miles, Uleui (on Ambrym)8 miles, Lonorore 28 miles, Sara 24 miles, Longana 15 miles, and either Redcliffe 11 miles or Walaha 17 miles before the 28 miles to Santo for lunch. After a steak sandwich lunch at Mama's at the airport we retraced the way back to Vila in the afternoon.... So usually going from Lamen Bay to Paama to Uleui I would be down low, working like a one-armed paper-hanger doing the after takeoff checks, prelanding checks, the load sheet, and calling on company frequency to the next agent or two to see if the anticipated pax boarding was still the same or if they were trying to squeese another pax on to cover a nosho and if I could uplift them..

Fun.

Serious respect FrigateBird!! Funnily enough I took a bunch of Missionaries from Santo to Redclif yesterday and was sitting there waiting for them to come back whilst reading Biggles and his adventures in an Otter!! I'm impressed with an Otter getting out of Redcliff, it was fun enough with 6POB in a Robinson C206 yesterday, good thing they mowed it for me... and by mowed I mean it was only 2inches of sodden ground with the clippings left behind :E luuuuxury ey? By the way, was it always 680m?

Or maybe it was the prayer they did just before take off...First time i've had missionaries doing the praying, its usually people trying to get back into his good books at the last minute with me!!! :}

Twin Otter ....

Have you had a good close look at the two crater lakes on that 5'000' plum pudding shaped island of Aoba (between Longana, Redcliffe and Walaha)? I remember the villagers were evacuated one time because they thought the island might blow. One of the lakes has dark blue water, while the other that the gas bubbles up through is a light coloured duck-egg blue.

The cliff faces on the north side of Aoba while going between Longana and Walaha are worth a look too..

Sara was the place where I helped deliver a breech birth in the Twotter during a Route checkout after the the other pilot refused to get involved. We had to amend the numbers on the second taxy out.. I checked with the hospital when in Santo the next day, mother and baby were both doing fine. It should have been named after me !!

Great to see the P51 ammunition lockers being put to good storage use...

Sort of reminds me of 1982, whilst I was a RAAF Avionics Tech at RMAF Butterworth. RAAF Mirage jets flying from OZ to replace those returning for DLM's always had any spare space packed with Australian wine. There was an unused locker on the STB aft underside that could fit in four 5 litre winecasks, provided the cardboard was discarded. Wine in Malaysia was very expensive in those days, particularly as we had access to low cost duty free women. Oops, I mean beer.

Just grabbing my hat and you know the rest...:ok:

DUDE, WHERE'S YOUR GEAR?! FedEx MD-10-10F N559FE - gear-up on KORD approach into RWY 28 [10.20.2012] - YouTube

Nice landing!

Grogmonster
14th Feb 2013, 09:23
I would say that was an EGPWS save!!! At 400 ft or therabouts the GIPWIZ would be saying, "To low gear", or a similar warning which under normal company policy would require a go around but those guys took it in their stride.

Capt Fathom
14th Feb 2013, 10:04
A zoom lens can be very deceptive!

Based on the time to touchdown, the gear started down at around 700'.

Don't know what their SOP's are. I normally have the gear down by a thousand!

Jabawocky
14th Feb 2013, 20:56
40 seconds to TD. Agree with Fathom...>400'

Fuel savings at its peak :ok:

VH-XXX
14th Feb 2013, 21:07
It would be embarrassing if it was the tower that told them to put the gear down. I recall a tower controller at YMMB telling me of his proud record of no gear ups ever whilst he was on shift (over many years).

RENURPP
14th Feb 2013, 22:23
400 ft +or- depending on slope divided by 40seconds is around average 600 feet/min. The last few seconds the rate of descent is negligible allowing the approach rate of descent to be up around 700 ft/min and as I said we can't see if there is any slope on approach.

That sounds very much like time for "Too Low Gear" to me, or a "**** gear down", maybe just prior to the CAWs

Capn Bloggs
16th Feb 2013, 04:37
It's nowhere near 700ft. Too Low Gear comes on at 500ft, plus a couple of seconds for "WTF?!" and then down she goes. Renurpp's close at 400ft; 35secs at 700ft/min, I reckon.

404 Titan
16th Feb 2013, 07:51
Using both RoD and trigonometry the altitude was about 460ft when the gear was selected down. Based on that I would guess they got a mode 4A warning, i.e. “Too Low Terrain” at 1000 ft RA then a mode 4B warning “Too Low Gear” at 500ft.

Yes, the same REK.
She certainly got around.

Opals were the attraction here for the charterer...

Distinct 'New Australian' accents from somewhere in the Balkans, one of them carried a briefcase from which he produced cash to pay for fuel, hotel (great old fashioned one in Quilpie) and food. Also contained a handgun which made the refuelers eyes boggle the first time he saw it...

An interesting couple of weeks then back to Melbourne.

Doesn't the F16 and Super Hornet look just a little bit old fashioned by comparison to the F22 Raptor? A bit of bad luck that our USA allies weren't prepared to sell them to us? Perhaps not, as they were too expensive for the Yanks also. And didn't come up to expectations anyway. That's why they are out of production with fewer than 200 built. Very sad.

I've seen that a couple of times now after departing north from YADL on commercial flights (Due to the pre-flight refreshment preparations, I can't remember how long into the flight you see it but I seem to recall not too long. 10 to 15 minutes seems to ring a bell... Next time I'll pay more attention...I promise!!)

When headed north Its viewable from any of the starboard window seats. I've often wondered about it as it seems to be well maintained.

Apparently it was started about 35+ years ago. It's a few km east of Brukunga in the Adelaide hills - an old copper mining location -and adjacent to an off road motor cycle park. Near enough to S35.00, E 139.01.

Full story here (http://www.biblesociety.org.au/news/jesus-written-in-the-trees).

PS There are /were rumours of a house close to the threshold on the approach to R23 at ADL whose owner had painted "F***K OFF" on the roof - no doubt as a gesture of delight at the somewhat irregular air shows which he / she was privileged to experience. :p

During the big nationwide advertising campaign of the early 80s that was all over the media you had the 'LIFE BE IN IT' slogan everywhere.

A farmer even started writing it with his header through his sparse looking (seasons had been bad) crop a few miles out of Cowra.

Only what he really started to write before he hit the fence and had to stop short was -

LIFE BE BUGGE . .. . .

Square Bear, please don't take offence! The comment was made with my
tongue planted firmly in my cheek. Stickybeke is a welcome
contributor to PPRuNe. But I haven't noticed any of your contributions before.

So, have you ever been a pilot? Which, I understand, means that one has
actually flown an aircraft solo? I have.

If you were flying a GA a/c equipped with a (say GNS-430) Nav/Com/GPS, and entered YADL direct to fly to Adelaide you would be in big trouble.

And that's why this sort of detail is rather important. :ugh:

Gerry I think most prudent drivers would not blindly track direct to anywhere unless it made sense especially distance wise.
GPS's are fantastic contraptions but unfortunately they have made a whole new generation of out of the loop and lazy pilots in some ways.

Am just glad for this thread, never "paxed" that often out of YADL so was unaware of the photo op, appreciate stickybekes kind suggestion of what side of the aircraft I should sit on.

I understand that there is also a similar type deal near YASP :),
That being the YASP that is to the north of YADL.

Somehow I still lean towards the crispness and purity of 12 synchronised exhaust stacks as a solo instrument, however a duet will still be worth an ear to the sky :ok:

Thanks for the pic of the duo Mustang BTW. I'll read up on it - be interested to know who's the PIC.

It sure is as sexy as she has looked in years :ok:

So how many engines per paint job does she get? you get through engines faster than most.... must be a spectacular ratio!

Jaba,
I reckon it was painted in the 80's or early 90's by Douglas's. They did a top job with prep, as we had very little issue with the surface once stripped.
I've had it since 2005 and am on the last 3rd of it's 3rd engine.
At that rate there will be quite a few engines for this paint job.

Cheers,

Hey Skywagon,

The pics of REK brought back memories as at the time it was owned by a Gold Coast opal miner. I did some time on this & one other "straight-tail" 310, TTM - prawn spotting) in the period, apart from a heap of other model 310's before & since. Could tell you a tale about how REK became Coolangatta Tower one night.

Cheers.

Memories! What great photos!

About that shot of the MMA F.27 taxying in (you can almost hear it screaming, can't you?) - the Friendship is either VH-MMR or -MMS (I believe the only two F.27's to wear the orange/chocolate scheme and MMA titles), the DC-3 in the background is VH-ABR while the two Beech 65's are VH-CFI (nearest the camera) with VH-CFD behind.

The only one I never got to fly was VH-ABR....

I think you're right about the domestics shifting to Melbourne (Tullamarine) in 1971. My log book shows a flight out of EN on 18th June, followed by a flight out of ML on the 20th.

Hi jaba, obviously the K means it is in the US of A and the vor freq and com freq are common to KGCN. The give away was the north south road depicted on the screen that passes by the airport. Lancair's comment had me guessing though. If that was the case, the twotter was coming in tail first.

He has to build up holiday credits with the wife occasionally so that he is allowed to go to OshKosh when it comes along. It's a worthwhile approach with proven results.

Lancair's comment had me guessing though. If that was the case, the twotter was coming in tail first.

I could only see 1nm and the aircraft on a northerly heading, I guess I should have said 'close to' and given the ground speed maybe, on a hot approach, didnt consider on departure, Hard to tell where the exact KGCN icon was. Otherwise I used the same info to determine the location.

Pontius
2nd Apr 2013, 09:00
I could only see 1nm and the aircraft on a northerly heading

I've never used this type of GPS before but given there's an arrow pointing North and that's pointing down the screen, wouldn't that make the aircraft heading South?

I'm just a sore loser because I thought it was a KO-- on the identifier and couldn't find any airport in the States where KO-- matched those frequencies. I think I need to get out more :)

Just south of this position is, I believe, the HARS C-131 which is currently being prepared for a long ferry across the pacific.[/URL] If you go straight down from the Nomad you find it just before the railway line.

Does the C131 have an Aussie history?

Does the C131 have an Aussie history? According to HARS FB page this airframe does not. The civil version, the CV-440 does have Aussie history having been operated by Ansett, TAA and 34Sqn RAAF.

There's something you don't see every day, vintage helicopters! Most of them crash before they retire. I'm impressed with the quality of the photo from Google Maps. They have probably done this for other key locations however I haven't found any yet.

Here's your C131 Wanderin Dave. That would be a fun ferry flight...

Is that the remnant of a B-36 with it's nose in the shed? Always thought it a pity that one of those wasn't kept to marvel at .......

Edited to advise that they actually have apparently. Four on display apparently and one in 'storage'. Might have to visit the USA someday after all ....:8

From memory The U.S. Ambassador in Canberra had one available for his use back in the 70's, I think either operated by U.S.N. or U.S.M.C.

Best beach in the world!
