Emergency crews are at the scene of a light plane crash at Kununurra airport.

The single engine Cessna crashed at the north-western end of the runway earlier this morning as it was attempting to take off.

Two people on board walked away with minor injuries and are being treated by ambulance staff.

Senior Sergeant Jack Lee from Kununurra Police says the runway has been closed while crews examine the scene.

"The plane is on its roof, there is some leaking fuel," he said.

"But, the people on board have been taken away and they appear to be ok at this stage."

Update 2.30pm: Two men have been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a light plane crashed at Kununurra Airport this morning.

The crash happened at the airport, which is about 3km west of the Kimberley town, just before 9am.

A police spokesman said the six-seater Cessna 182, which is owned by local charter company Shoal Air, only had the two men onboard when it crashed on the Ord River side of the runway.

Police said the plane lost power shortly after take off.

It is understood the plane had just left the ground when its engine cut out and its pilot tried to land while it was still above the runway.

The Shoal Air pilot deployed the plane’s landing gear and went to land in the clear strip to the right of the runway, but the land was boggy and the plane skidded when it hit the ground.

The plane nosed into the ground, flipped and landed in tall grass next to the airstrip.

Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley chief executive Gary Gaffney said pictures he had seen suggested the plane had not been flying high when it came down outside the boundaries of the airport, just beyond its perimeter.

Mr Gaffney said emergency crews dealt with a fuel spill and the airport was closed for several hours while it was made safe.

Police were investigating the crash on behalf of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

“The two people that were inside the aircraft walked away from the aircraft and there was no report of any major injuries,” Mr Gaffney said.

The pilot, 37, and passenger, 57, both suffered minor injuries, with the pilot receiving facial injuries.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said the men were taken to Kununurra Hospital.

They have one in their fleet - VH-OWZ, a Skylane RG.
