I knew Pete of old from my helicopter days with Aeromega and only recently re-connected with him through Linkedin.

I crossed the channel in a 206 where I took him as a safety pilot as I had my wife and my daughter and I wanted some professional backup. Half way over the channel it turned out we lived almost next to each other in a tiny village in France. Then at max gross he carefully and gently helped me get out of Issy le Mol without overtorquing anything only to get a call from ATC to tell me that my daughter had left her laptop in the terminal and we had to return for another go half a pound lighter. I could have cried at having to do the whole thing again and he didn't even bat an eyelid.

I am honoured to say that he and his family became friends. He was the standard to which I foolishly aimed at, with no hope of success. He was a genteman, an outstanding aviator, a father and partner to B...

I miss him, I am in shock and it pains me that our cruel defiance of gravity has claimed someone so simply outstanding.

In the unlikely event that you read this B... you know who I am and we are here for whatever you need..

Farewell to one of the noisiest and most decent people I have ever known.
From sitting in my old office selling each other air strikes on the CAA, to sitting on Med beaches drinking gallons of beer you made me laugh always.
Our annual first meet up of the year at Cheltenham was always a good reason to go and freeze at that event, meeting in wet fields in the West Country always made the waiting fun, and middle of the night chats on London Info when everyone else bar the controller were long in bed made staying awake easy.

Our favourite restaurant near Issy will be a very empty place in future, and your joy and amazement at becoming a familly man, adoration of B and the kids were completely obvious, as was your care for other people.

Off for a LARGE red right now. Good Bye Pete

I knew Pete and though I never flew with him I enjoyed a drink with him on a couple of occassions.
Everything that needed to be said about Barnsey's professionalism, competence, love of his family, raconteur and almost iconic status within the industry has been thoughtfully posted on this thread.
It shocks, saddens and leaves a big hole as well as many question marks about why and if only..........

If I was half the pilot that you were.........

Rest in Peace

Very sad news.

Pete's life revolved around two things: flying and family.

As others have said, he was a very experienced pilot. I flew with him on several occasions and always found him to be skilful and professional. Throughout the many years I knew him he was one of the busiest freelance pilots in the UK, not least because of repeat business from a long list of satisfied customers.

He was a family man, devoted to his wife and two young children. Always enjoyable fun company, with friends and at home, Barnesy was one of life's gentlemen and one of the kindest people I've known.

RIP Barnesy. Each time we met you were invariably smiling and cheerful. Your shoes were far too big for me to fill, up here in the North East although I've tried for 15 years. There are many pilots flying in our industry today who are there because having met you they wanted to be like you. The helicopter world is a much poorer place without you.

Sh*t. Another old mate gone. Just woken up in Australia to this awful news and listlessly wondering why this has to happen to some of the very best aviators I've known. One thinks of Colin Bates, John Sefton, Dave Roue and Spotty Mulhern for starters, and I'm then reflecting on how Barnesy was right up there with the very best of them.

Cheeky, full of enthusiasm for all aspects of life, and hysterically funny. As all the guys who came with us to Athens will attest he was always the antidote to a hard day at the "office". You could guarantee that he'd be the first one to don the Speedos and grab the best lounger in order to win the bronzing trophy hands down. By the time the rest of us had ambled down to the pool Pete would already have half a dozen aviators with tears of mirth rolling down their faces at some half-likely story about the tribulations of the day's flying. They were certain to be holding a beer that Pete had summoned.

Thanks Pete, for your professionalism, your company, your love of life, and your fun. We will all miss you terribly. Our hearts go out to B.. and to the family.

Much love JG, SL and T

Colin 'Master' Bates (ex-Hanson) and 'Spotty' Mulhern (ex-Ferranti) .. sorely missed.

From one thing to another, thinking about Peter's family .. is there a group of 'helicopter widows' in the UK that could be of some comfort to Peter's wife in the weeks ahead?

It may sound odd but after the initial response from family and friends she and the children will have to 're-build' their lives and this is where those who have been through something similar can very often provide some oft needed practical advice and support.

If there are any 'helicopter widows' reading this perhaps you may have some thoughts.

My sincere apologies if this query is in any way inappropriate.

‘I have flown with "Barnsy" many times over many years both in the UK and across the continent. I have never experienced a more conscientious, skilled and professional pilot.

Like so many of us drawn to these versatile aircraft he was a real character. We had wonderful times enjoying the freedom of flight but Pete was always mindful of safety and responsibility to others.

My heart goes out to his family and all of those affected by this tragic accident.

When the investigations are complete I am sure it will be found to have been just that - a tragic accident. We should all be proud of the safety of flight in the UK and particularly in the crowded skies over London. Please never forget that thanks to pilots like Pete Barnes the helicopter is still the only method of transport devised by man that has saved more lives than it has taken. Thanks for the happy times Pete, and the lives you saved when flying the Air Ambulance.’

I seldom post on PPRuNe. Last night, reading the condolences, I was close to tears. Regrettably, I did not have the opportunity to meet Pete Barnes. Forgive me, the following verse has been posted before on PPRuNe, it touched me then, as it does now

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air,
Up, up the long delirious burning blue.
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew;
And while with silent uplifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

A week on, at 0800 on Wednesday, I shall hold my own 2 minute silence for both Peter and the gentleman who died at the scene. Our thoughts go out to all affected by this tragic accident.

I was introduced to "Barnesy" through the late Phil Ward back in April 1994, remember the days flying around in G-AVSZ the old Agusta-Bell 206II which I collected from Yorkshire after repaint in Metro colours for the traffic contract on the 3/5/1994. Pete was a natural broadcaster, outstanding friend and pilot. At least Pete you will be in great company as on the same day my old friend Captain Graham Snook (The Baron ) lost his fight to retain life and passed away after a short illness at 0205 hrs another great loss to aviation.

Note the waistcoats. Pete was famous for his brocade waistcoats at Ascot and other occasions, and many of the scores of helicopter pilots who attended wore them in tribute to him.

The eulogies were a perfect balance of moving tributes and funny stories from Pete's life, by his brother Chris, Amer Nimr (an Oakham school friend) and pilot Patrick Margetson-Rushmoor.

The hymns were a mixture of traditional and modern: Jerusalem, One More Step Along the World I Go [chosen by Pete's children Alexandra (12) and Freddy (8)], Lord of the Dance and, after a rousing Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer, Pete's coffin was carried from the church by his skiiing friends, to the sound of I Wan'na Be Like You from Jungle Book.

Before the family left for a private service at the crematorium, we stood in the churchyard as an Agusta 109 flown by Captain Leon Smith performed a fly-past over the church.

A very sad occasion, but interspersed with laughter.
Barnesy would have approved.
It was impossible to be in his company without laughing - and anecdotes about him made us laugh to the very end.

I shall always remember not only the enormous number of people who attended the funeral but the very obvious affection for Pete throughout the day, both during the service and and at the reception later.
