BIG LAKE - The National Transportation Safety Board has joined the federal aviation administration in their investigation into an Aerocare helicopter that made a hard landing in Big Lake on Saturday.

One nurse on board the plane was injured.

Just before noon Saturday, the medical aircraft carrying a pilot, nurse and a paramedic was transporting a patient from Fort Stockton to San Angelo.

On the way, the helicopter had mechanical problems.

According to a statement by Med Tran, the company who owned the aircraft, the helicopter eventually lost power, forcing the pilot to make a hard landing at the Big Lake Regional Airport.

The impact injured the nurse, 47-year-old Beth Hooper from San Antonio. She taken to Midland Memorial Hospital and is recovering.

The pilot, the paramedic and the patient were all ok but the patient was still taken to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.

Officials were out for several hours investigating and cleaning up the debris.

The wreckage has been stored into hangar at the airport until Federal Aviation Administration officials arrive to complete the investigation.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A medical helicopter had to make an emergency landing at a Nashville college campus.

The pilot told WKRN-TV (Helicopter forced to make emergency landing in Nashville - WKRN, Nashville News, Nashville Weather and Sports (http://bit.ly/130oQAf)) a gust of wind blew the helicopter off course during the final approach to the St. Thomas Hospital on the city's west side, just before 11 a.m. on Monday.

The pilot landed without incident on the property of Aquinas College, about a block away from the hospital. The patient was taken the rest of the way by ambulance.

No one was injured and the helicopter was not damaged.

Type: Bell 407
Tail #: N489AE
Operator/Vendor: Own Part 135

Weather: Clear. Not a factor

Team: Pilot, Flight Nurse, Flight Paramedic. No injuries reported. No patient.

Description:
On the evening of December 24, 2012 at approximately 1945 CST, N489AE,
a Bell 407, was lifting from its McAllen, TX Base en route to a
transferring facility for patient pickup. The crew consisted of the
pilot, flight nurse, and flight medic. While at a stabilized three
foot hover, the pilot initiated a pedal turn to prepare for departure.
During the pedal turn, the pilot experienced a vibration and
simultaneous uncommanded right yaw. The pilot immediately rolled the
throttle to idle and performed a hovering forced landing. During the
post-flight walk-around, it was determined that the tail rotor had
made contact with a main rotor blade of a static Bell 407 that was
parked adjacent to the helipad. No injuries to crew members were
reported. The FAA and NTSB have been notified. The base was put back
in service with a backup aircraft.
