"AT LEAST one person is dead after a light plane crashed at Burrum Heads about 10am on Monday.

Hervey Bay senior constable Tom McKinnon said the Cessna plane crashed at 10.06am and then caught fire.

Three police crews, including an inspector and the forensic crash unit, are at the scene, with one occupant comfirmed dead.

Several other emergency crews were also at the scene including representatives from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

A representative from the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau said they had been informed of the crash and would have more information soon."

UPDATE: A man is dead after a light plane crashed at Burrum Heads about 10am on Monday.

It is believed a Gympie man was killed in the crash.

There were some reports that two people were onboard the plane at the time of the accident but Snr Const McKinnon said crews at the scene were now confident only one person had been killed.

The pilot submitted a flight plan to Gympie Airport this morning but it was believed he had taken off from a private airfield, Snr Const McKinnon said.

The pilot is believed to have crashed while attempting to land the plane.

Ergon Energy spokesperson Rod Rehbein said the plane crashed into power lines on the Burrum Heads Rd.

It landed in a paddock across the road from tourist adventure park Flame Lily Adventures.

About 1600 homes and businesses in Burrum Heads are currently without power.

Mr Rehbein said power was expected to be restored to all but four customers by about 12.30pm after the damaged section was isolated.

Four spans of wires have come down as a result of the crash and Mr Rehbein said it would be late afternoon or this evening before the remaining customers would have power restored.
