g-shock. Lots of varieties, relatively cheap & displays UTC time + local time + date and day. I like functional, not "classy". I find the expensive ones stupid. These also do Adelaide time zone, many don't.

I have a Citizen Skyhawk, bought as a grad present from my family. Great watch, titanium and dual zone plus the "slide rule bezel" (which I never use), super light and looks great without being over sized and wanky. However, its major down fall is it wont do half zones, aka central time which is a gripe seeing as I fly in the NT.

So if your east or west coast only and want something "piloty" its a good buy, however my next watch will be a dual time G-Shock that does half zones!:ok:

Does that mean that if you are regularly in and out of India, you have to re set? That's a big market to ignore.

I'd go for the Ulysse Nardin Tellurium Johannes Kepler watch:

http://www.ulysse-nardin.ch/ulysse-nardin-webseite/uploadfiles/343f8370-84e6-4db6-9e59-e4a6727f7a82.jpg

The flexible bar spring rotates around the map in the middle, bending with the time of year, and indicates time of sunset, sunrise and area of daylight (in the Northern Hemisphere - the map is the Earth seen from above the north pole.)

The lunar symbol displays the phase and position of the moon. The dragon head and tail indicate eclipses of the sun and moon, respectively. The perpetual calendar ring rotates to display the date, month and current zodiac sign below the "12 o'clock" position. Completely mechanical and self winding (UN-87 workings) and it's water resistant to 30 meters :)

Yours for just $120,000 :ok:

G'day Spyder,

There is a work-around on the Promaster - you can re- align the hands (procedure in the manual) and use that function to re-align the hands 30 minutes out of whack to the digital display. I have my digital display on UTC and the Analog presentation on local time.

...and I use the slide rule all the time cos its quicker than pulling out my phone and trying to open the calculator :8

Yeah, I got one of those Ulysse Nardin watches but it was too big for my girly wrist so I cut the band off and stuck to the panel of my 150 with blu-tac... Looks ok I guess... :8

It's very important you buy a really really BIG one, and if at all possible it should have the word "Pilot" on it!

I have one of these. Looks sort of manly watchy and is a phenomenal timekeeper.

I also have one of these. Looks smart contempory - I bought it in Gib in 1970 - but is not now such a good timekeeper.

These days you don't need the slide rule thing. Personally, I use the phone for day / date. I use the phone for alarm too. I don't use it as a stopwatch (the ADF or aircraft chronometer or iPhone will do that). That leaves the only thing for a watch to do is tell the time.

I do still like the forth GMT hand. So, I have a Wenger (Swiss Army) one that looks nice and a Luminox for my everyday one. The Luminox has baby LED's on the hands and all hour points, so its excellent at night. There are very few GMT watches.

I'd just get the one you like that's easy to read.

The Omega distributors (Something with swiss watch in the name. In Waverly Rd near Burke Rd) do a really good job of refreshing old watches.

Seiko Astron GPS Solar.

I've got one, it updates every day from the GPS constellation. Sort of like those radio watches but infinitely better because you don't need to be in Japan, Europe, or the US. Also has a second time zone display.

Never worry about setting your watch again!!

If you're willing to spend some money, you can't go past the Omega Speedmaster. Not too elaborate but very functional & easy to read (day or night). NASA did their homework & chose it.
Actually they pop up on eBay often & you can save a lot of coin.

Caution...

I have an Omega Speedmaster Professional which I bought from Fiji in 1968.
It is not waterproof.
I was splashing around in the local pool, and it got condensation under the crystal.
So I sent it back to Louis Frere & Son, Berne , and they 'resealed' it and sent it back.
Washing the car one hot day, splashed some water over myself to cool down...guess what?.
Back to Switzerland it went, this time with a 'cranky' covering letter!
Back it came, with new warranty, and when it happened AGAIN, I threw it into the drawer, in its box, and there it sits....

My Big W digital does it all....loses 3 seconds over 3 months, and hasn't leaked yet.

Cheers , and bah humbug to those expensive overpriced timepieces....

A police officer turns up at an accident scene. A open car door has been completely torn off by a passing motorist.

One driver is first to the cop, “look what this peanut has done to my beautiful Beamer! It’s a 750 with all the bells and whistles, now it’s ruined!”

The policeman looks him up and down and says “You’re a pilot aren’t you?”

Motorist: “Yes, but how on earth did you know that?”

Policeman: “Well sir,in all your fuss and worry about your precious bloody BMW, you’ve failed to realise that in taking the door out, your whole right arm was torn off as well!”

Motorist: “OH MY GOD!!!!!!! WHERE’S MY ROLEX????”

Thank you, I'll be here all night...:E

My silver LORUS SPORTS is the best watch I've ever had. Nothing over the top, handles the abuse of the beach and seaplanes and can be dressed up too. $120 from a jewellers.

http://www.keepthetime.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/seiko-sportura-alarm-chronograph-7T62-silver-blue.jpg

Seiko Alarm Chronograph is nice. I only use the outer rim for fuel conversions and metric to imperial or reverse convernsions ( back of the envelope), and dont bother with slide rule stuff that some models have.

It has a nice stop watch on it and perhaps the best thing is a loud alarm to get you out of bed!

A bit pricey and perhaps a little on the thick side, but well made.

Uses up about 65,000 Qantas FF points however!

My 2 cents (rounded down to nuthin').
Any slide rule/ flight computer bezel type arrangement is worthless. Way too small to read in turbulence, even with good eyes.
Get an easy to read good quality watch and use your flight computer (or ipad:)) to do the calcs.

Nothing wrong with my eyes...

If you have something with a leather strap, it will get a bit on the nose after a couple of weeks of sweat absorption, so a paste of bicarb soda allowed to dry on the band and washed off will bring it up schmick as.:ok:

Bought a Torgoen T22 as a spare at an airshow last year. Replaced the band with a stainless one shortly after.

Like having two zones. Current time (analogue) UTC (digital). Has 30 times zones available.

Buy a decent Rolex, a Sea Dweller or similar, it will cost a bit but you will never need to buy another watch, and your oldest son probably won't either if you leave it to him. If you get really stuck you can probably sell it for not a lot less than you paid for it. Some, I think the GMT master and Daytona are worth quite a bit more now than they were new. Most have a so called lifetime warranty, but it actually runs out after 50 years. Just a thought.

Features I want in an aviation watch (in order of importance):

Analogue local time (i.e. an hour and minute hand)
large digital date.
Sweep second hand.
Text day of the week (surprising how hard it is to keep track on a random airline roster!)
Second time zone (UTC) - not so important now that I am in the UK, but would be nice. Preferably as a large digital window. (No digital seconds, that would be too busy - using the sweep second hand.)
Good strong night light/night viewing system.
Quick, easy to set, countdown timer with loud alarm / alerting device, for both approaches (in the few minutes range) and for next waypoint/radio call (in the many tens of minutes range).
Reasonably loud wake-up alarm - set off the local (analogue) display.
Lunar phase, for interest and an idea of how bright the night will be.

- I have never seen a watch with all of that, by the way - so I just wear a swatch. ;)
