For the past 20 munutes, I have been watching two Tornadoes at about 40,000 ft, flying in a long elliptical pattern at moderate speed with the second aircraft positioned about two or more miles behind the leadind aircraft.

They appear to be turning at the mouth of the Humber then flying along the coast line, then out to sea & back.

Can anyone explain what this might be?

Gaz ED I was comparing them with Civil aircraft overflying on www.flightradar24.com (http://www.flightradar24.com) (30 to 39,000 ft) "So, for you my boy, 30,000ft" !!

At the risk of trying to be helpful and provide a sensible answer is it possible they are flying patterns at Donna Nook range?!

RAPTOR .....?

If it still exists of course;)

Nobody said they were bombing. They may be supporting a CASEX using a pod for instance. It would be an odd place to fly race track patterns if Donna Nook weren't their intended point of interest.
For the record, I don't know for sure, I'm just making an educated guess.

Possibly a just a good old fashioned CAP

Must have been a 'kin long sortie ..... the ADV Tornado F3 retired from service in March 2011.:ok:

Definitely not a CAP. The Tornado has only a last-ditch self-defence air-to-air capability.

Almost certainly supporting a CASEX, or perhaps even just going round-and-round practising weapons delivery profiles using a targeting pod. Like using a weapons range, except without the weapons. And the range.
