Hi folks,
Bit of a long shot but here goes..

I was visiting friends in the lake district recently and heard a distinct sounding aircraft engine - I just made it out on the balcony to to catch the briefest of views of what, to my untrained eye looked like a Spitfire. Didn't reappear but I would guess it was flying low straight up Lake Windermere toward the North. I guess it was around 11ish on the morning of Saturday September 15th last.
Please satisfy my curiosity - would love to know what it was I saw!

Many thanks in advance,
AGOW

Hi

A lot of RAF flying takes place over The Lake District. Some are single engined turboprop Tucanos which make a very distinctive sound and can reach around 300mph at low level.

May very well have been a Spitfire, particularly on on a Saturday AND September 15th of all days!

There used to be an excel spreadsheet knocking about on their official website that detailed all flights of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight but after a quick hunt I can't find it. I managed to catch the odd flypast by timing some of my journeys around that! But of course if it was a private Spit then it wouldn't feature on there anyway. Good luck though, must have sounded great in that environment.

On the other hand, of course, it could be one of those elusive VC-10s with winglets... :ok:

I'll get me coat.....

Here is the display schedule for Sat 15th Sept. Seems it was not a BBMF plane.
