Hi, I have been in recent contact with an old chap who tells me of a crashed plane, he belives to be from WWII in the vacinity of Auchenlarie on Wigtown Bay in Galloway.

He told me the wreck used to be visible at low tide, but that it has eithersunk deeper into the sand, or disintegrated. He wasn't around in the war, but remembers it in the 1960s.

The only crash I can find on line is an EE Lightning prototype, with is too far south and happened in 1959. (The first UK supersonic ejection. The poor guy spent 29 hours in the sea before he drifted ashore!)

Can anyone point me In the direction of the crash this old chap is talking about? I am assuming it is an allied aircraft, but that could be wrong.

Cheers.

I believe this is P-47D 44-33142 16 Feb 1945 which crashed on a ferry flight from Renfrew to Burtonwood. Another version siuggests that it might be a Liberator although I think that one came down much further out.
