I've been told that university is not a requirements to become a commercial pilot by a few people and some flying schools. However is it true that with a degree, you tend to get accelerated promotion? And also, is the www.gapan.org a reliable website?

And also, is the GAPAN - The Guild of Air Pilots & Air Navigators (http://www.gapan.org) a reliable website?

GAPAN is a highly respected organisation.

However, it is a UK organisation so the advice given their does not represent the industry in other parts of the World.

In some parts of the world there is a perception that a degree in itself has value, and this will increase your chances of promotion. Singapore by reputation is one of those parts of the world.

However, in the aviation world specifically there are two questions that will get asked of you:

(1) Have you the licences to do the job
(2) How well do you do it.

If a specific degree makes you better at doing the job, then in aviation, it will improve your promotion chances. Just a degree for the sake of having a degree however, will have no value, in an aviation environment.
