View Full Version : Memorial stone erected where Obamas exchanged their first kiss !
AlpineSkier 18th Aug 2012, 06:36 Gedenkstein in Chicago erinnert an ersten Kuss der Obamas - Panorama - sueddeutsche.de (http://www.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/gedenkstein-enthuellt-chicago-entzaubert-liebesmythos-der-obamas-1.1444091)
The article says that a sandwich chain has erected a stone in a little garden to mark the spot of their first kiss on their first date.
First off, can someone tell me which chain this is, as I never want to knowingly support their business if they perpetrate this kind of puke-inducing nonsense.
Secondly, am I alone ( and strange ) in being annoyed by this kind of pathetic trivia cropping up in our newspapers. The Sueddeutsche ranks as a serious paper and may be reporting this as human-interest or just page-filling material in the dog-days of summer.
Has this had much coverage in the U.S. and , if so, what is the reaction ?
Shack37 18th Aug 2012, 11:23 What form does this erection take?
vulcanised 18th Aug 2012, 11:35 Quite nauseating, but it's that time of year when the meeja go for this sort of non-story.
racedo 18th Aug 2012, 11:35 Apparently the chain was saved by Romneys Bain Capital.
Wonder is this why Obama has been so keen on saving GM because he sees one of their cars as having played an important part in his and Michelle's life :E

Slasher 18th Aug 2012, 16:33 If they built a plaque at the place where they had their first kiss I suppose
they'll go and erect a bloody temple where they had their first fcuk. :*
hellsbrink 18th Aug 2012, 16:50 And the first kid would be named "back seat of an 84 Chevy"
belfrybat 18th Aug 2012, 19:20 So a totally non story. Yes, it's silly season. Obama himself never asked for it, probably was totally unaware. Didn't cost a penny in tax money, but should be enough to start the Obama Is Bad band tootling up.

No, it is a question of tradition in this country. As far as I know there has never been a statue or a memorial of a serving President ever erected while they were in office or I believe still alive.
No law against such, it's just not done. As for President Obama knowing about this, don't know, don't care.
Of all the things that President Obama has done not to deserve to be reelected, this is nonsense to be concerned about.
Solid Rust Twotter 18th Aug 2012, 19:50 Do you think they'll call it the Sacred Sepulchre of the Sublime Spaff, Mr Slash?:}
I see Paul Ryan "forgot" to mention a trust fund that deliverers a six figure income...
Mitt won't release his tax details... summat to hide methinks... what a wa*ker.
As for Obama... promise the world deliver a small island in the middle of nowhere...
Jeez guys, you need to come up with something to salvage the office of president...

Doesn't belong in this thread. Take it to the US Wheel.
On subject, I don't begrudge Obama worshippers their right to create a shrine, misplaced though their adoration might be, in my estimation.

As far as I know there has never been a statue or a memorial of a serving President ever erected while they were in office or I believe still alive.Well, there is George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (named after the elder Bush not the more recent one) who is still quite alive and kicking. And there's even a statue of him there, though they recently moved it to a somewhat more obscure location.
For the record, I'm certain Reagan was still alive when National Airport (DCA) was renamed in his honour. I'd bet there's a statue of him somewhere there, too, though I can't say I've ever seen it.
Sorry for polluting this forum with aviation content. My bad, as they say on the street...
