For some, this may be a daft question. What is the best way to make contacts in the biz if you have no connections within the industry to start with, even in here nearly everyone stays anonymous. I ask this because most of the time good networking and building up good contacts can lead to jobs etc.

I agree with this point. It's all down to who you know. I am interested to see what people think. LiNkedin is a good start

Surely you at-least have contacts through the school(s) you used to get your licences.

Then there's what social side exists wherever you fly. Any club nights? Professional pilots fly for fun too, and are as likely as pure PPLs to turn up to such things.

Those two are obvious starting points. Also I believe that most pilots unions (BALPA, etc.) have a "trainee" grade and becoming involved with them can't do any harm. A quick Google shows a trainee grade of BALPA which is free, and a student grade of the IPA for £30pa. Either or both will give opportunities to go and network.
