View Full Version : Thank you London
Uncle Fred 12th Aug 2012, 04:05 What a brilliant Olympics. In my opinion the best of all. Organizers, participants, volunteers, and residents have granted the world a breathtaking spectacle. I had one of my country's gold medal swimmers on board out of Hounslow the other day and enjoyed hearing what it was like from a competitor's standpoint. Great for athlete and fan alike.
I had always believed that Britain's finest hour was Bannister's 3:59.6 that day long ago up at Oxford but I must say this is close if not equal.
Well done! Very well done.
Chapeau bas!
Bally Heck 12th Aug 2012, 05:47 Jessica.
I was going to say that three times. But I only want to give her one.
rjtjrt 12th Aug 2012, 06:48 Well done UK.
It seems to have overwhelmingly been a HAPPY Games, not just for those involved, but for the whole of the UK.
So well organised and run, but with a minimum of fuss.
Congratulations to the citizens of the UK - you have so much to be proud of.
John
Dave Barnshaw 12th Aug 2012, 10:47 :DBally Heck. Me too-well done Jess.
Storminnorm 12th Aug 2012, 10:55 Brilliant Games!!! Well done everyone involved.
It's been absolutely SUPER !!!!
(I'm glad it's nearly over though, My dressing gown smells a bit
by now, and I've almost worn my slippers out.)
yotty 12th Aug 2012, 11:57 Norm, stroll over to M & S and purchase new said items. You'll be just in time for the Para's to start! :ok:
goudie 12th Aug 2012, 12:39 What with the Queen's Jubilee and now these magnificent Games, this year has been a good one for showcasing the UK.
11Fan 12th Aug 2012, 15:52 this year has been a good one for showcasing the UK.
Preceded last year by the wedding of William and Kate of course.
We like a good Royal Wedding over here. Well, some of us anyway. Certain charm to it.
What's the money on someone starting an 'RIP the London Olympics' thread do you think?
lurkio 12th Aug 2012, 20:00 There was a warning that queues would be bad at the park and to arrive early because of the airport style security. Jeez, if only the airports were like this. Pleasant, smiling civvies and the most reassuring thing, service personnel. Went through in about 1 minute for 5 of us. Can we have that as the legacy of the games please.
gingernut 12th Aug 2012, 20:18 The joy on Tom Daley's face when his competitor did well said it all.
Even a miserable old bar steward like me felt proud. Not 'cos he got the Bronze, but 'cos he was overjoyed about some'one getting the Silver.
Never really got "sport" but I guess that's what they call "sportsmanship.":)
Have to agree, top Olympic Games and very very well done to
Team GB, what a really great effort and result.
I think the UK / Team GB will be a powerhouse of sport at the
various events in the next 10 years or so.
Reading the media, the services and volunteers did a superb job
with a smile under very difficult circumstances.
We, as in Australia certainly have some catching up to do.
.
Having said that, I'm finding the closing ceremony very tacky. Lot's of superannuated pop stars singing their hits from the past 30 years - many of whom the athletes have never heard of - let alone not understanding the lyrics.
A bit too much of the Cool Britannia for me.......
gingernut 12th Aug 2012, 21:37 It seemed to be getting better until Annie Lenox came on.
And all respect to Mr Bowie, but would have preferred to see him.
Anyway it could be worse, they could roll George Michael on.....
oh no:}
11Fan 12th Aug 2012, 21:44 Since the closing ceremony runs for five and a half hours over here (complete with commercial breaks), and not even starting for another five hours here in California, I'm gong to record it and watch it later.
Must say though, as for the Olympics itself, ya done good.
Agree, it would have been good to see Bowie again.
gingernut 12th Aug 2012, 21:59 Wow, it's great on here, it's just like facebook.
Anyway, who's the fittest Sice Girl?
Overall I have been very impressed with the closing ceremony.
Glad the Spice Girls didn't go on too long.
gingernut
"Anyway, who's the fittest Spice Girl?"
Fittest in terms of what ?
Running, having babies, marathon session of xxx ?
gingernut 12th Aug 2012, 22:15 Fittest, as in the most reem.
Or if the world was about to explode and you were allowed to bonk one of them, I guess it'd have to be Emma.
"I guess it'd have to be Emma."
+ 1 :ok:
parabellum 12th Aug 2012, 22:29 What's the money on someone starting an 'RIP the London Olympics' thread do you think?
Followed by endless condolances posts and at least two MET Reports!;)
avturboy 12th Aug 2012, 23:56 For many and various reasons (mostly work related) I have not seen any Olympic coverage, opening ceremony or games themselves ... nothing.
However this evening found myself in front of TV for most of the the closing ceremony ... wow ... what a varied offering it was ...
I really didn't get the 'Queen' bit, sorry to say but Brian May and his guitar solo just didn't do it for me.
Thought that Roger Daltry / The Who gave a much better account of themselves
Oh ... and on the Spice Girl topic, well Mrs Avturboy is 'Mel C' so she gets top score but I've always had a softspot for Emma 'baby spice' .....
alisoncc 13th Aug 2012, 00:07 Added to all of this Rory McIlroy (NI) winning the US PGA, with David Lynn (Eng), Justin Rose(Eng) and Ian Poulter(Eng) joining him at the top of the leader board. Bloody brillant.
wiggy 13th Aug 2012, 00:28 As an expat may I also say chapeau guys....sceptical as I was and still p'eed off that I couldn't get a single ticket but it was a brilliant.

Exactly, some of those Bronze medal winners had the face of a bulldog sucking a wasp.;)
