View Full Version : SE NVFR vs ME NVFR

I requested a re-print of my licence due to the addition of a MECIR. When the licence returned, it noted that the NVFR was now a single engine NVFR.

I didn't realise there was a SE NVFR or a ME NVFR - can anyone direct me to the appropriate section of the regs which specify the requirements, or is this CLARCs taking liberties when the licence was re-printed?

Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance.

CAO 40.2.2 Appendix 1 Para 3.2 & 3.3

3.2 An aeroplane grade of night V.F.R. rating gained as a result of a flight proficiency test conducted in a single-engine aeroplane shall be valid for single-engine aeroplanes only and shall be endorsed accordingly.
3.3 For the purposes of paragraph 3.2:
single-engine aeroplane includes a centre-line thrust aeroplane.

What type of a/c did you do your NVFR test in?

Have a look at CAAP 5.13-2 (0) (http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/download/caaps/ops/5_13_2.pdf) - many CAR's quoted there.

5.7 Removing a single-engine aeroplane limitation

5.7.1 To remove a single-engine aeroplane limitation from a
NVFR Rating, a flight test must be conducted in a multi-engine
aeroplane. However, where a person also holds a current
aeroplane command or co-pilot instrument rating that was issued
or renewed on the basis of a flight test conducted in a multiengine
aeroplane or simulator, a flight test is not required for the removal of the limitation.

Flight Crew Licensing Procedures Manual Section 18.5.3 may also help

18.5.3 Removal of Single Engine Aeroplane Restriction (Multi-engine Upgrade)

CAAP 5.13-2(0)

To remove a single-engine aeroplane limitation from a NVFR Rating (CAAP 5.13-2(0)(0)),

a flight test must be conducted in a multi-engine aeroplane. However, where a person

also holds a current aeroplane command or co-pilot instrument rating that was issued or

renewed on the basis of a flight test conducted in a multi-engine aeroplane or simulator, a

flight test is not required for the removal of the limitation.

When a NVFR rating flight test is required, the testing officer must be satisfied that the

applicant can safely control an aircraft of the appropriate category (aeroplane or
helicopter) in all flight tests for the removal of an aeroplane limitation, the manoeuvres or
procedures previously demonstrated in the flight test in an aeroplane may be accepted, at
the testing officer's discretion, as meeting that requirement and need not be demonstrated
again in a multi-engine aeroplane. In exercising this discretion, the testing officer should
take account of the applicant's night-flying and multi-engine aeroplane experience as well
as his or her currency in night-flying. The testing officer is entitled to require any or all
elements of the flight test to be demonstrated again.
CASA suggests that the minimum requirement for a NVFR flight test in a multi-engine
aeroplane to remove an aeroplane limitation should include demonstration of engine
failure in cruise (mandatory) preferably by day under simulated instrument conditions,
demonstration of instrument flying proficiency; and any other night-flying item or items of the flight test at the discretion of the testing officer.

Following successful completion of the flight test, the single-engine aeroplane limitation can be removed from the NVFR rating by the delegate.

Excellent point, but make sure the delegate acually notes/notifies the upgrade, otherwise if your CIR expires, you're back to SE NVFR only.

Any idea if this principle applies to adding navaids to the NVFR as well (eg DME and GNSS)?

Any idea if this principle applies to adding navaids to the NVFR as well

CAAP 5.13-2 (0) (http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/main/download/caaps/ops/5_13_2.pdf) (again) -

5.8.2 When issued, a NVFR Rating will normally include an
endorsement for one or more radio navigation aids. If the holder
of a NVFR Rating subsequently wishes to add additional radio
navigation aid endorsements to the rating then another flight test
is required unless the person holds a current pilot-in-command or
co-pilot instrument rating.
5.8.3 In the case of a flight test for adding a new navigation aid
endorsement to a NVFR Rating, the same principles apply as for
the removal of a single-engine limitation in that the testing officer
may use discretion in accepting which items of the flight test that do

not need to be demonstrated again.
