Can anyone shed some light on the document outlining the process of becoming an ATO (from grade 1)
I have found Plenty of docs on the casa site including the ATOM, and the CFI requirements, but is there an actual document that outlines any hours/time requirements for an ATO or is it buried in the docs and I've missed it?
Thanks in advance

You can try contacting the FTTO. Their details are on the CASA website.
Hopefully they will be more helpful these days and respond to phone call and emails. When I tried to get testing approvals a few years ago, they only had one person handling it and he was off sick most of the time. Then when I could get a hold of him, he told me that I probably won't get approved as there were enough ATOs in the area.:ugh:

Firstly, they are going to ask you if there really is a need for you to be approved e.g. You a lot of students and ATOs are hard to get.
You will need to do a Professional development program with the FTTO. Here is where you can out about them.
Civil Aviation Safety Authority - ATO Professional Development Program (http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:STANDARD::pc=PC_90400)
You will also need to have a mentoring ATO to train you.

Just remember, the approval is now only valid while you are employed with the school. No more Freelance was what I was told be the FTTO.

Hope this helps.

Angel, I am part way through it. As far I can see, you start and see what happens.

1. Ask for application forms and fill them out, just getting this far may take weeks
2. Find an industry mentor and have him approved, this also may take weeks.
3. Once the industry mentor is approved you will then get istructions
4. Follow these instructions and fill out the provided paperwork (this is where I am at)
5. Do a professional development course at a time and location set by CASA
6. Do a test with CASA. I am not sure what this entails yet.

I am thinking the whole process could take 6 - 12 months and naturally there will be a cost.

The funny thing is when I became an RAA CFI, all testing approvals came with the appointment. I can even renew the instructor ratings of instructors working for me.

My opinion: CASA is a bit hard, RAA is way too easy ....

When I did my ATO flight test, I had to provide a "perfect" flight plan for a PPL test (they provided the route).

The FTE went over the plan, then we hired an aircraft and went for a fly. He played "Bloggs" and my role was to pick his "fails".

When he bombed an item, I had to state what he'd done, why it was a fail, and the consequences; fail, fail with partial credits, etc.

...and when you've passed and it's all done and dusted, like Aussie Bob said... you wait!
