If we have to make the profile of the average ppruner regarding (gender, occupation, type of house where s/he lives, car s/he drives) what would be the most average/ most common element?

I understand most are guys and speak English as the first language. What else could you add?

Treating the topic seriously ... JB does seem to have a lot of extrovert, opinionated, sometimes well informed, and often passionate posters. We are almost all involved or interested in aviation, and presumably educated and solvent. Just the sort of people who observe, and have strong views on what is going on in the world. We live in an era where society is tending to polarise into left or right. So it is helpful to be able to debate with those from the 'other' side, who at least share one common interest, and therefore some minimal meeting of minds.

Difficult to know till your close enough to find out and then it's too late.

KAG
3rd Aug 2012, 10:49
I am not a specialist of personal attacks like many here, I am not a specialist of humour when humour means making fun of others for free, I don't believe either right wing or left wing is right and have all figured it out, so don't really have a political party, (right and left wing are part of the democratic game, nothing else), I made myself (well, long story about my "family") and earned my life and career path with my own blood and efforts and my country support (especially educating me through the army and a short career as a fireman, then paratrooper) since the very beginning, and as such understand what is valuable in life, for me no excuses, just results, and at the same time a true empathy for people around me who are not fortunate or lucky enough in life.
I have been use to be on my own since I am a teenager, what for sure influence who I am, today in my thirties I made it to what I dreamed about when a kid (what very few, would believe I was capable of, airline captain), so in many aspects I am definitely not the average ppruner.

My home is not in my country, my everyday language in the family of my own is not my mother tongue language, neither it is english, and I am preparing an early retirement sailing my boat around Europe. I am maybe a free minded gipsy ppruner?

AlpineSkier
3rd Aug 2012, 11:32
No KAG, you are not average in this company.

Many people here have many international connections through work and personal relationships but you probably are towards the top of the scale. If one adds to this your background in the forces and fire-service, you become that bit more "special".

I wasn't aware of your age until today - I estimated mid-forties - so you reduce the average age somewhat - congratulations.

Your contributions to many threads are in a minority but you defend your position doggedly and always politely , although I have to say that I often cannot follow your logic. I think this must be a manifestation of the North/South mental/educational divide.

I live in France and speak good French and have dealt with French industry throughout my professional life, but French bureaucracy is difficult. I can go to the local town-hall with a question about creating a parking-space on land I own and the relevant official will talk to me for eight or nine minutes - no interruptions from me - and at the end I don't know if he has reached any conclusion/solution. I don't know if he deliberately talks like this to avoid making a decision or because his education has been based around the beauty of a well-formed argument without seeing the desirability of a conclusion.

In this case above - which did happen to me - I believe that in Northern countries I might have got a firm decision, but instead of being able to just amble into the town-hall and see the official immediately, I might have had to make an appointment, submit my question in writing and wait for a written reply.

It wasn't my position when I started writing this, but I think, after reading this, I prefer the French solution ( in small communes anyway ).

Significant thread-drift here, but KAG is an unusual member of the regular contributor clan ( at least on the anglophone threads ) so hope acceptable

P.S. I would be careful about saying "gypsy Ppruner ".. that will just ignite another flood of rhetoric ( apologies for the mixed metaphor but it just seemed to flow ! )

I am not a specialist of personal attacks like many here, I am not a specialist of humour when humour means making fun of others for free,

Your first comment is, in itself, a personal attack against 'many here', although not directed at a specific person.

You also don't seem to see others' sense of humour, so you've hit the nail on the head there.

You seem to think that anyone who disagrees with you is making a 'personal attack' and then again when someone makes light-hearted fun of your obdurate refusal to accept that the EU is a dying horse, you take that as a personal attack.

Earlier this week, in the EU thread, I said I admired you for your courage in defending that everyone else sees as a failure, and I posted a photo of a blinkered horse. I am sorry that you took that as a personal attack, it was meant as a bit of light relief.

I think that most of us, typical Ppruners, took it that way. But by your own admission, you're not a specialist of humour. I find the French sense of humour very hard to understand, in fact I often wonder if it exists.

Having read the rest of what you've said about your life and career, I have to say I respect you for that too, although many others here are no doubt similar.

vee-tail-1

Not sure how to define an average ppruner. But there are some who debate without insult, and who provide really useful information, plus thoughtful and sometimes challenging opinions. KAG is certainly one of those; as is Conpilot Tableview and quite a few others. The ability to communicate and debate with people from many countries & backgrounds is vital IMO if things are going to get better.
Pity about the sad people who enjoy personal attacks, innuendo, sarcasm, and general trolling. Pprune is what we all make it, and those who get their kicks from gratuitous insults add nothing to the mix. :yuk:

That's not an average, that's a mean. And some are meaner than others. Thus those who are less mean balance out those who are more mean. If you consider both within the context of a statistical average, then the Normal Distribution - the bell curve, equates to the shape of your average tin foil hat deemed necessary for protection against falling asteroids and the like.

Cacophonix

The professional pilot statistic would be hard to ascertain methinks as PPRuNer's are not obliged to furnish licence numbers and issuing authorities. I guess (a statistic made up on the spot) that would be more than 50% and the number of PPRuNer's having a pilot's licence of one sort or another pushing that number appreciably higher.
