OK, OK, it does sound like a long shot, but a gent I spoke to tonight swears that there will be a whole new terminal facility built at and around the vicinty of the QF maint base - not sure if it will be stand alone or connected to the existing terminal structure.
Time line to be within the next 5 years
It may also explain the decision to close the Heavy Maint facilty.........
Must be coming along with the third runway :ugh:

CRAP.
Here is the Master Plan that they are required to publish as a condition of the government licence to operate the airport.
Some other interesting developments coming that affect the other maintenance hangars though.

If only they could get rid of that pesky VOR they could build a whole new shoppign complex just around the corner on the other side of 27!:}
Having seen Melbourne grow over the past 40 years, my suggestion would be to start again.
There not enough gates, the freight apron is being used to as a domestic terminal and aircraft holding off gates at peak times in the morning is disgraceful.
By the plan it appears the Virgin hanger complex becomes a freight apron.

I had the misfortune to arrive at Melbourne's international terminal early one morning last week. I have to say it was the worst I have experienced anywhere. The CIQ facilities were totally inadequate to cope with the number of arriving passengers and crew, resulting in very long queues and more than a few frayed tempers. The arrival hall is very rundown and in dire need of a makeover.
What a way to welcome visitors to our country. Honestly, there are so-called third world countries that have far better airports than Australia.

Yes, its a disgrace.
Passengers having flown for up to 20hrs then having to wait for up to 40 minutes on the taxiway because "their gate is occupied.
The proposed expansion only assists domestic passengers. There is no planned growth in the Shopping Centre (some call that space the International Terminal).
In the master plan the international pier is also extended with extra gates.
