Turin,

Sally was 61 years at her passing. Perhaps a misread of the story.

Still too young when old farts like me are still around and well. A very nice lady with a lot of class and nerve. :(

This may be where the 40 came from.

Ride is survived by her partner of 27 years, Tam O'Shaughnessy, her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin, and nephew, Whitney; her staff of 40 at Sally Ride Science; and many friends and colleagues around the country.

America's first female astronaut comes out in her obituary (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9423807/Americas-first-female-astronaut-comes-out-in-her-obituary.html)

America's first female astronaut has posthumously revealed she was gay in an obituary posted on her website after she lost a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

In an obituary posted on her website shortly after her death, it was revealed that she is survived by Tam O'Shaughnessy, her partner of nearly 30 years. The pair met while playing tennis when they were 12 years old and stayed in contact as Dr Ride became an astronaut and Dr O'Shaughnessy became a professional tennis player. Both later earned doctorate science degrees.

Dr Ride's sister, Bear Ride, and a spokesman for Sally Ride Science, the organisation led by Dr Ride and Dr O'Shaughnessy, later reportedly confirmed that the astronaut – who was once married – was gay.

"I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them," Dr Ride's sister told the BuzzFeed news website.........

Cept in my case, it would be Scotch.

So she was gay. No big deal. Still a great loss.

(That did, however, mess up a couple of fantasies I had about her and outer space. :()

Ye never know con you could have been in with a chance, not much choice up there she might have fancied a change.

Pity though maybe it's true about the good dying young!!!

I spotted the reference to ‘partner’ in the obituary but decided not to comment on it as it is not really significant. Or is it? Without downgrading the lady’s incredible achievements I wonder if it was a factor in selecting her as the first female astronaut. No chance of one of the guys joining the 200 mile high club. Has it been achieved yet? Purely academic interest of course. Jan Davis and Mark Lee, were the first married couple to go to space in 1991. Indeed it was their honeymoon. Apparently the subject is a taboo with NASA. :=

To be the first is not always the best choice :ouch:
You opened a new page in US Space. No page is closed .
You opened the door to Svetlana Savitskaia (USSR coming back), to Helen Sherman first in Europe, to Chiaki Mukai in Japan, together against discrimination for a world where Men and Women are Friends to get better on the Earth.

Thank you. ;)

Good Bye Sally
