In July 2005 some hikers started a fire in Guadalajara Spain which destroyed 13,000 hectares of forest and resulted in the death of 11 people fighting the fire.
TV-3 news states today that one of the hikers has just been sentenced to 2 years in prison and a fine of €10 million. (Yes you did read that correctly, it presumably includes compensation).
Whether it will have any effect on the idiots who light campfires or throw cigarette ends out of car windows is another matter, but I'm sure anyone who has ever fought a fire or seen a beloved stretch of forest go up in flames will applaud the sentence.
