View Full Version : Recording Cockpit Video + Audio?

Hi guys,

I have been watching many solo flight videos on Youtube...where flight school students video themselves doing their solos.

I myself will begin flight school in September, and I'm looking at doing a nice cool video of my own solo as well..

Ideally, I want to be able to record full HD clear video as well as record the comms between myself and ATC.

Can anyone suggest a good/affordable set-up for this purpose? I know Go Pro Hero 2 HD has input for audio...but how to set it up to record the comms between ATC and myself as well?

Regards
Bryan

Search the forum? :E

Seriously, Bryan - there are quite a few threads dealing with this. One at least only a few weeks ago. It might be why you haven't had many replies.

I think the Drift HD 170 has the option for plugging in a mic...you can then just pop the mic in your ear cup on your headset,

Very slim camera with full RF remote control....cheaper than the Go Pro as well.

Drift Stealth Audio kit - Mic & rear cover & 3.5mm adaptor (microphone, HD170) | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Drift-Stealth-Audio-kit-Mic-rear-cover-3-5mm-adaptor-microphone-HD170-/380404554345?pt=UK_Photography_Microphones&hash=item5891e0da69)

It hasn't even drifted off the front page yet.

Just take a few minutes to look at the review of a 1080p Wired Bullet Camera on the front page of this site: Techmoan - Techmoan (http://www.techmoan.com/)
I was impressed enough by the quality, features and (at this time, vague) price to be ordering one soon.

Eventually it'll be replaced on that page so here's the YouTube address: 1080p POV Wired Bullet Camera Review - YouTube

I would be suprised to see any "bullet" camera which can shoot through the prop without the horrid prop effects.

Peter, a neutral density filter in front of the lens will remove many of those effects - it slows down the electronic shutter.

I tried that... it helped but didn't remove it, by a long way.

The only way I ever found of removing it properly was with a manual shutter speed cam (Canon Legria G10; not cheap) and shooting at 1/120 or slower.

I have a friend who must have videoed most of the last 10 years of her life. I'm afraid the idea fills me with horror, but each to their own.

With that out of the way, are you thinking of filming yourself for posterity or for the educational value. I can imagine that the latter might be quite valuable, though personally I enjoyed the independence of my early solos and the fact that I was the only person who ever got to critique them. I got plenty of feedback from my instructors during the remaining 35 hours. There's something very liberating about making and correcting one's mistakes independently.
