Having just seen the trailer for "Jack Reacher" (due out in December), I was wondering if Lee Child, the writer of the books that this character appears in had any say in who was to play the lead role?
The fictional Jack Reacher.
Reacher is 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair.
Tom Cruise, the actor playing Jack Reacher (in his own words).
"I have always been pretty much the same weight, 147 pounds - at 5 feet 9 inches"
I know it's only a film, but surely there are actors who would fit the bill better.
I think Danny DeVito is a good actor, but I wouldn't expect to see him in the leading role of a Hulk Hogan biography.
CityofFlight 5th Jul 2012, 23:20 Well, Tommy Boy is a bit like a Jack Russell. Believes he's bigger than he is and is not often taken seriously. :p
Nervous SLF 5th Jul 2012, 23:46 Tom Cruise is 5ft 9 inches? Well well I always thought he was shorter than that.
I know he was chosen to boost tickets but as a great fan of the books I for one will Not be going to watch.
I refuse to give my money to that actor and also I would laugh so much at him in the film that I would be asked
to leave so wasting even more of my money.
Tom Cruise is 5ft 9 inches? Well well I always thought he was shorter than that.
The quote I gave was Tom Cruise saying how tall he is.
Many (most) websites actually put him a bit shorter at 5'7" to
5'8".
I also like the Jack reacher books, and won't be paying to watch the film, although I will probably end up seeing it on a long haul flight sometime.
I know that ex wrestler "The Rock" (Dwayne Johnson) isn't what you would call an Oscar winning actor but at 6'5" and 260Lb, I think that he would fit the roll far better.
Fox3WheresMyBanana 6th Jul 2012, 00:23 Hollywood is not in the business of making movies; it is in the business of making money. You would not believe the drug habits some of these guys have to finance, and if that means flogging rubber toys made by slave labour paid a $ a day and selling them with a 90 minute advertising film, so be it.
CityofFlight 6th Jul 2012, 00:33 Many talented actors could play the part. I wonder if Tom didn't put some investor money/producer role to secure the part. Just can't believe any other reason he would get it.
The only box office draw he seems successful in are the Mission Impossible, which I have yet to see. So why would any production company risk placing him over other credible choices?:hmm:
Now Katie Holmes can wear heels again.
Actually, Nicole Kidman said that after she and Cruise split.
CityofFlight 6th Jul 2012, 01:39 Although, she married Keith Urban who ain't all that tall either.
But they look far happier than Tom has ever been. How sweet it is! :ok:
Fox3WheresMyBanana 6th Jul 2012, 01:49 Tom Cruise is 5 ft 9 inches?

Katie Holmes can wear her heels again now she's got them back from Tom

Fox3WheresMyBanana 6th Jul 2012, 02:34 maybe she rescued some of her lingerie too....
As far as Tom's movies go, I liked this recent one. Almost a parody of Mission Impossible.

pigboat 6th Jul 2012, 03:38 I don't see how Child could approve of that short little prick playing the part of Jack Reacher.
Hollywood made such a complete 24-carat POS film of the book Fate Is The Hunter that Ernie Gann sucessfully sued the producers and had his name removed from any association with the movie.

As said above, the money speaks.
anotherthing 6th Jul 2012, 06:50 Lee Child has said several times in the past that if anyone would make an ideal 'Jack Reacher' on film, it would be Lawrence Dallaglio. Obviously, with Cruise, money talks.
A A Gruntpuddock 6th Jul 2012, 07:33 Just saw the trailer - looked dreadful!
Just an excuse for yet another bunch of fights and car chases.
Been a while since I read one of the Reacher books but I seem to recall that he only resorted to violence occasionally.
Only served to remind me that it is time I bought another one!
I've read many of the Jack Reacher books and I have an image in my head which is dissimilar to Tom Cruise.
I'm not going to ruin my enjoyment of the novels by destroying that image.
Sorry Tommy & Lee, this doesn't work for me. (But you're only after the money)
Lon More 6th Jul 2012, 08:54 Tom Cruise is 5ft 9 inches?
in his heels and in his dreams
A A Gruntpuddock 7th Jul 2012, 20:09 Where's Cheyenne Body when you need him?
If Clint was not interested then Tommy Lee Jones would have made a good substitute (imffho).
CityofFlight 8th Jul 2012, 03:10 Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor for the part. Another one that came to mind is Liam Neeson. He has the stature and acting ability. (IMHO)
sevenstrokeroll 8th Jul 2012, 04:47 dear pigboat
I think that "Fate is the hunter" the movie is a great aviation movie. Sure, complain that the plane is phony...but what is really wrong with it? I know its not the same as the book (one of the greatest of avatiion books)...but come on.
Ernie gann regreted losing the royalties and expressed it later in life.
and Tom Cruise...midget boy...I don't know who he is goint to portray, but whoever it is, I won't pay one cent to see the film.
