Stopped to show the missus the Commando monument near Spean Bridge just after 1300 local. While the scenery was spectacular, the pair of gr4s tracking east down the great glen held our attention. My guess is they were "targetting" the swing bridge further down the glen. What a beautiful day it was for flying. Hoping the 2nd crew are recovered safe.

From what I have just heard not a happy ending for one of the two recovered.

Not willing to provide details so please do not ask.

General thoughts as an ex GR1 driver. Its a hard and dangerous business and the RAF has maintained a very good safety record on the GR1/4 fleet.

From time to time even the best of us make mistakes, when they occur at low altitiude and high speed the results are usually fatal.

Thoughts go out to the families.

RAF SAR don't have AIS transmit. I don't think they ever got AIS receive either - certainly not before I left.

Sumburgh may have gone home - they have had a long day - but I'm sure Lossie will still be at it - and RCC have to work at maintaining some asets at readiness for other calls.

Very sad news indeed and whilst we know these things happen, we all prey that they won't. We fly in blissful denial of the statistics, and trust in our skill, our crew, and in providence. Unfortunately, providence is a cruel mistress, and does not always favour the brave, talented, or right.
We must take solace in the fact that the best SAR force in the world is looking for them, and won't stop whilst hope exists.
Whatever the outcome, those involved are heroes, in the true 'dan dare' sense,.and should be always known as such.

Doesn't really matter what you flew in the RAF, you feel compassion for those involved right now. I left the FJ world some time ago. Many good people didn't come back from my world and we miss them occasionally but remember them always. We knew the risks and accepted the challenges - lady luck has smiled on all of us from time to time but, once in a while all the elements contrive for her to frown. We did what we did because we were above bloody average and loved it. We spat in the face of danger and challenged it daily. Bring it on!! Hopefully the guys were having fun, didn't expect it to end like this and wouldn't wish to go any other way. RIP and thank you fellas. Thoughts always with those left behind.

I have felt compelled to register with PPRuNe to add my condolences and deep sympathy to the families and friends of those affected by yesterday's incident in the Moray Firth. I was posted from Lossie only a few months ago and I can appreciate how everyone is feeling, even those who are employed in a ground branch like me. My heart goes out to all in the Lossie community, both on and off the base - it is a tight knit community up there and I know that everyone will be supporting each other during this difficult time. It is at times like this that the dangers of flying are brought home, but it is also a time when the RAF family and community support processes really kick in. To those who are missing, I am sure you are really free to spread your wings in a better place - reminds me of the words in 'High Flight' - rest in peace.

Very sad news and tough times for all involved.

I know from witnessing the reaction from the crowds at Cosford over the past 2 years that the display by the GR4s of XV was one of awe, respect and envy. As an ex GR1 operator, back in the day, sadly these things happened more regularly. The feeling felt at the news of loss of fellow aviators doesn't change. Although, as I've probably got both airframes in my log book, I know what LJR was trying to say.

It's only natural for relatives to feel anger at this time. Don Henley summed up the media's hunger for "news" in his song dirty laundry..... I will never forget the scruffy camera crew invading the funeral of a Sqn pilot some years ago.........

"High Flight" is a moving and exceedingly well written Sonnet (particularly when you remember the author was just 19 yrs old when he wrote it and was killed in a mid air collision shortly afterwards).

Fast Low and Feeling free.... U tube, that's a pretty good reminder of the reasons I loved the job that I did: Unless the GR force has changed markedly I expect it's nearer the mark that these guys did so as well.

There was nothing worse, when answering the scramble phone, than to hear that one of our own was missing. The need to find them became a driving force - nevermind the weather we would launch in the hope of finding them safe and well.

To find them safe and sound was fantastic but to fail to find them was horrible - could we have done better, where we searching in the right place, had we missed them?

My most sincere condolences to all the families and friends - and 'Best of British' to the survivor in hopsital.

To those left to carry on - the military has an odd but effective greiving process that helps ease the pain, as I am sure you are discovering. Having experienced that shock in the past (and remembering it only too well), you will remain grateful for the many friends around you at this sad time; united in grief and united going forward. I am sure all on the sqn will pull together and stand tall.

RIP chaps

Where to begin...flew with Sam on XIII Sqn numerous occasions over Iraq, on loads of dets overseas and back in Blighty. One of life's nicest blokes, nothing ever phased him, he was really chilled and a great WSO. A tragic loss.

Knew Adam when he went through training, possibly flew with him as his QFI but will need to check my logbook. Far too young.

Didn't know Hywell, but Godspeed to a better place fella.

I've known xxx almost as long as I've been in the RAF, flew alongside him on 17(F) back in the 90's and again on XV(R). Get well soon m8, though I suspect the scars from this will stay with you a long time.

My heartfelt condolences to all the families, friends and colleagues of our lost buddies.

I would dearly like to pay my respects to Sam so if anyone is aware of any funeral details once announced, I'd appreciate a PM. Thanks.

So very sad that this tragedy has now cost three lives. May they Rest In Peace. I agree with flip, it is now that the Service family really shows its mettle. Thoughts for those left to grieve and the hope that the lone survivor makes a full and complete recovery.
If this be the price of Admiralty...

Flying at Lossie today, though on a weather hold when the CO made his heartbreaking announcement. The sense of loss was so poignant. A moment I'll never forget.

To all the family, friends and colleagues of those lost, my sincere condolences. And the hope for you all, that with every passing day, your pain gets a tiny bit easier to bear.

All our prayers now for the recovery of the fourth crew member.

Worked the flightline at XV(R) for quite some time, and I strapped in Sqn Ldr Bailey (or Flt Lt, as he was back then) a fair few times. He always had time for a chat with us oiks. Bloody nice bloke.

My heartfelt condolences to all friends, family and the wider Lossie community and I pray for a positive outcome for the survivor.

Aim Sure.

Because I fly
I laugh more than other men
I look up and see more than they,
I know how the clouds feel,
What it's like to have the blue in my lap,
To look down on birds,
To feel freedom in a thing called the stick...

Who but I can slice between God's billowed legs,
And feel the laugh and crash with His step
Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks?
The rainbow's secret?
The real reason birds sing?
Because I Fly,
I envy no man on earth.

Absolutely dreadful.

Has there been any news on whether they have been able to recover the missing jet as yet?

Another piece of reporting full of inaccuracies. Having personally known both of these individuals for several years it makes me sick to read this stuff.

Stay strong Fi, my thoughts are with you.

Moose,

Couldn't agree more - how on earth can it be deemed appropriate to publish details of a victim's family, whether or not they have a professional connection to the tragic event? Strongly considering a snottogram to the Telegraph, bastion of good reporting, obviously...:ugh::ugh::ugh:

Not just the Telegraph, Fi's photo was published on STV news tonight. I'm sure she'll welcome the finger pointing and tongue wagging when she's next in Tesco's. Why can't these vermin let her grieve for her still missing husband in peace. Stay strong Fi xx

May they rest in peace.

And may their grieving relatives be left in peace.

A speedy recovery to the one who's in a "serious but stable condition."

Joined to add condolences to family and friends of those involved. All thoughts and hopes are with you, that you may find strength to carry on from the time you shared with those involved.

Knew Sam as he joined the RAF. A professional from the early days. Good company on the hills, a questionable dance routine and annoyingly good at everything. One of those people who could make a wait in a parked car a riot. He was just fun. A more generous, committed to his friends and thoughtful soul would be hard to find. A large Sam shaped hole is left in life. Gone too soon.

Knew Adam on IOT and when i was OC Chips at Linton. Met H sailing for the RAF and roomed with him on sailing trips a couple of times and also knew him at Linton. The pair of them were all that was and is still good about life in a blue suit. Great people and whilst i am not well enough to travel to Bangor today to say goodbye to H, I know all there will say goodbye and raise a glass to all.

Bugger, must have some dust in my eyes....

I was on that IOT course and knew both Sam and Fi (Fi somewhat better, but I distinctly remember doing some AT with Sam up at Grantown-on-Spey). It was a tragic end to a bad week. I hope that in due course Fi will find a sense of peace. F_S out.
