Anyone know how this works?
Or would you have to kill me if you told me!
Is it a software based INS - using accelerometers?

Not new tech, it uses cell towers to triangulate positions. For instance my old phone could navigate (sprint USA) only as long as I had cell service. No practical use in aviation.

Most smartphones use A GPS (Assisted GPS) which also uses cell information to either initially fix or assist with further navigation. Which is is why can't use the "GPS" on some phones outside the range of a phone signal.

It still needs GPS to get started so "Alternative to GPS" is probably the wrong term. More like GPS enhancement. i.e. it goes where GPS caint.

poor mans GBAS?!?!?!

rely on the vertical?

NO, this is not a replacement for IRS/INS for ac, OR an alternate...
perhaps IF you are walking,
but if you bump into another person, its not usually a catastrophic event...
