Single engined heli. lea Valley crossing avoids the need to detour east of the zone. The entry point for the Lea Valley crossing from the Thames is......... Olympic Site.

In any case, City tower often only give clearances for "not above 1000ft". With the height of the buildings and the "helter skelter" (300ft), you'd be hard pressed to comply with the 1000ft rule along the Lea Valley route.

Except at night, of course, when you could be SVFR.

Sid - you can see the point John's making. Difference in a twin is that you can join direct Ally Pally to Vauxhaul bridge if you want a quick in/out, routing in/out from the north in a single was just about doable up the Lee valley, but no more. Fwiw John - not too much of a detour to route thames barrier, LCY overhead, becton, north circular to M11J4. There are clear areas but keep your eyes on the power lines... Certainly shorter than routing far east out of the zone :ok:

Airspace Safety just tweeted that it has been lifted - wonder if the rationale just didn't stand up to scrutiny.

Unfortunately we'll likely never know what happened.

I have never accepted that routing - not myself comfortable of my skills to put it down safely in the (unlikely) event of donky stop. I guess that's down to experience, of which I am (as yet) rather short. So when offered, I have opted for the coward's option; turned this down and gone East.

One day I will be better at this driving thing and can follow you. :O

My understanding is that it will be back tomorrow with a slightly different justification.......

That is my understanding: that the Olympics people will use "health & safety" as the justification, as the MPS have told the CAA there is no security issue at the moment.

As you suggest, the H&S argument is pretty self-evidently nonsense. The real reason is much more likely to be along the lines you suggest. Which is pretty despicable but also fairly typical of the way that the London Olympics people are steam-rollering everything to their whim.
