I've been trying to find some info about high level winds but none of the met books cover this so i'm posting this question incase there is some high level met gurus out there.

Can anyone explain wht the upper level winds and pressure systems are so different from the msl chart. Going from the wind at temp charts, the FL185 (500hpa) the winds are significantly different, even when comparing the FL450 and FL530 chart the winds are all over the place, often 180 deg difference between the two levels at the same geographic point.

lastly, why are the BOM charts still in B&W, surely in 2012 the BOM can do better than that. Yes the msl chart can be had in colour but no others.
